14U Girls beat Sioux Center to finish 2nd in league standings

JUNIOR VARSITY

The JV Rangers posted a 1-2 record over the weekend, losing 3-1 to Sioux Falls 2 on Friday and 4-2 to Sioux Falls 1 on Sunday, while beating Sioux Center, 5-1, on Saturday.

The Rangers are now 13-7 and sixth in the SDAHA standings with just one game on tap this weekend – at Fremont on Saturday.

• Sioux Falls 2 3, Brookings 1

The Flyers beat the buzzer to lead 1-0 after a period, but Luc Bouchard’s goal just 2 1/2 minutes into the second period tied the game at 1-1 as Jack McCarty and Dalton Rittershaus earned the assists.

Sioux Falls scored late in the second to take a 2-1 lead into the third, and then, added an insurance goal late in the final frame for the 3-1 win.

The Flyers held a 26-19 edge in shots, despite picking up 40 minutes of penalty time on 15 fouls.

Philip Kuechenmeister finished with 23 saves in the loss.

• Brookings 5, Sioux Center 1

The Rangers dominated play as they outshot Sioux Center, 41-20, as Reis Jacobsen collected 19 saves in the win.

Bouchard opened the first-period scoring off assists from Kobe Ischen and Rittershaus before the Storm tied it up at 1-1.

From there, it was all Brookings as Kane Kurtenbach lit the lamp off a Joel Syrstad helper, and then, Carter Merritt tallied an unassisted goal as the Rangers led 3-1 after one.

Rittershaus found the back of the net midway through the second as Riley Jacobsen set up the goal before Sajen Perry scored off another Syrstad setup to make it 5-1 heading into the scoreless third period.

• Sioux Falls 1 4, Brookings 2

The Flyers scored a short-handed goal to with less than 6 minutes to play in the first period, but Brookings tied it up 27 seconds later when Perry capitalized on the power-play chance with an unassisted tally.

Sioux Falls scored twice in the second period – the second goal on a power play – to lead 3-1 heading into the third, before Brenden Matheny found the back of the net off assists from Jacobsen and Merritt to pull the Rangers within a goal.

But the Flyers notched another power-play goal for the final as they held a 29-14 edge in shots with Kuechenmeister finishing with 25 saves in the loss.

BANTAM

The Bantam A Rangers split a pair of SDAHA league games over the weekend, losing 6-4 to Sioux Falls before bouncing back with a 7-0 shutout of Sioux Center.

Brookings, 11-2-0-1 and tied for second in the standings with Fremont with 23 points, travels to Sioux Falls for a rematch with the Flyers on Sunday.

• Sioux Falls 6, Brookings 4

The Flyers put up three goals in the first period before Logan Bortnem netted the puck off a Jackson Law assist to make it 3-1 after one.

In the second period, the Rangers scored back-to-back short-handed goals – the first by Brody Powers off a Wes Koenig helper and the second by Bortnem with the assist to Ashton Witte – to tie the game at 3-3 before Sioux Falls sandwiched a pair of goals around a Koenig score to lead 5-4 heading into the third. Caden Krogman set up Koenig’s goal as the Flyers tacked on an insurance goal in the third for the final score.

Carter Schulz came up with 10 saves in goal in the loss as Brookings held a 21-16 edge in shots.

• Brookings 7, Sioux Center 0

The Rangers scored three goals in the first and tacked on four in the second on 39 total shots to cruise to the shutout as Holden Richardson finished with 14 saves in the win.

Bortnem opened the scoring with an unassisted tally before Talon Richter knocked in three in a row for a hat trick. Trenton Peterson set up the first two while Bortnem and Witte assisted on the third.

Witte and Bortnem added unassisted goals before Powers lit the lamp to close out the scoring off assists from Witte and Connor Strand.

14U GIRLS

The 14U girls shut out Sioux Center in a 6-0 league win on Saturday at Vernon Arena to improve to 8-3-0-1 in SDAHA play, finishing second in the standings.

The second-seeded Rangers will face No. 5 seed Sioux Center in the first round of the 14U State Tournament on Friday, Feb. 16, back at Vernon Arena.

• Brookings 6, Sioux Center 0

The Ranger defense shut down the Storm, allowing just one shot in the first period as Heidi Merriman stopped the only shot she faced for the shut out win.

Kiran Vugteveen spotted Brookings a 1-0 lead after a period with an unassisted goal before the Rangers scored five more in the second for the final margin.

In the second period, Maggie Dunbar sandwiched a pair of goals around a Raya Hesser tally as Aletha Baker and Taylor Hokenson assisted on the first and Jadyn Kuehl and Baker set up the second, with Julissa Peterson and Hokenson picking up assists on Hesser’s goal.

Vugteveen scored her second goal of the game with the assist going to Ella Park, and then, Jayda Geraets tallied an unassisted goal for the final margin.

PEEWEE A

The PeeWee A Rangers won a pair of league games on Saturday at Larson Ice Center against Mitchell – beating the Marlins, 7-1, in Game 1 and then, 6-2, in the second contest.

Brookings improved to 18-1-0-1 in league play and sits third in the SDAHA standings with 37 points. The Rangers travel to Brandon on Sunday.

• Brookings 7, Mitchell 1

The Rangers built a 4-1 lead after a period as Eli Johnson opened the scoring with an unassisted goal before Owen Schneider lit the lamp off a Jack Merritt assist. Breck Hirrschoff found the back of the net with the assist going to Jacob Kahle, and then, Zach Struck scored off a Miles Merhib helper to close out the first.

Johnson notched his second goal off a Schneider setup before Schneider tallied an unassisted goal for a 6-1 lead through two.

Hirrschoff’s third-period goal – off a Jacob Peterson assist – provided for the final margin as Brookings held a 38-31 advantage in shots with Addison Ronning collecting 30 saves in net for the win.

• Brookings 6, Mitchell 2

After a scoreless first period, the Rangers scored four times in the second to take control.

Hirrschoff started the scoring with an unassisted tally before Kahle netted the puck off a Struck setup. Schneider scored back-to-back goals – the first off a Hirrschoff assist and the second unassisted – as Brookings took a 4-0 lead into the third.

Both teams scored twice in the final frame as Hirrschoff lit the lamp off assists from Johnson and Luke Honkomp before Johnson scored off a Schneider helper.

The Rangers outshot Mitchell, 38-31, as Ronning finished with 29 saves.

PEEWEE B

The PeeWee B Blue Rangers split a pair of game with Aberdeen on Saturday at Larson Ice Center as they lost 5-0 before coming back with a 2-0 win.

• Aberdeen 5, Brookings 0

The Cougars scored one goal in the first before adding two in each of the final periods for the final score.

Aberdeen outshot the Rangers, 26-23, as Egan Jensen collected 21 saves in the loss.

• Brookings 2, Aberdeen 0

After a scoreless first period, Gage Peterson lit the lamp in the second period with the assist going to Jacob Ramlo as the Rangers led 1-0 heading into the final period.

Jordan Raatz added an unassisted goal for the final margin as Brookings outshot the Cougars, 26-15, with Jensen stopping every shot for the shutout win in goal.

SQUIRT A

The Squirt Black Rangers went 0-4 at the Marshall Tournament as they lost 6-0 to New Ulm on Friday before dropping a pair of games to Luverne (7-0) and Northfield (7-0) on Saturday. The Rangers closed the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Marshall on Sunday as Riley Linstad tallied an unassisted goal in the first period and Gideon Merhib added another unassisted goal in the third. Ryder Anderson came up with 14 saves as the Rangers were outshot 17-14.

SQUIRT B

The Squirt Red Rangers posted a 1-3 record over the weekend at the Marshall Tournament as they beat Marshall, 6-0, but lost to Sauk Rapids, Sioux Falls and Worthington.

Against the Tigers, Issak Earley scored an unassisted goal in the first period while Taryn Richter, Andrew Hahn and Ashton Baker tallied unassisted goals in the second before Earley notche his second goal off a Richter assist.

In the third period, Hahn closed out the scoring as Shauna Pederson picked up the assist.
