15 new COVID-19 deaths, 417 new cases reported in South Dakota Sunday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 15 new COVID-19 deaths and 417 new cases in South Dakota Sunday.

Fifteen of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,188 total cases (five new confirmed and 10 new probable): 2,924 of those people have recovered (19 new), with 233 active cases (down by four) and 31 deaths (no change). A total of 10,348 people (35 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 110 people (two new) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There is one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Sunday.

Brookings County remains in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 103,318 (417 new – 241 confirmed plus 176 probable) as of midday Sunday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 5,040 are classified as active (no change from Saturday). As of Sunday, 96,693 people have recovered (402 new), 5,904 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (33 new), 237 people are currently hospitalized (up by three), and 1,585 people have died (15 new).

The SDDOH website reports 280,843 people (651 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new deaths, seven women and eight men, are being reported in Brown (2), Brule, Butte, Codington, Dewey (2), Hamlin, Hughes, Hutchinson, Jackson, McPherson, Minnehaha, Oglala Lakota and Pennington counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 40-49 years, three 50-59 years, one 60-69 years, one 70-79 years and nine in the 80-plus years category.

Increases in positive cases Sunday included, but are not limited to, 28 in Brown County, 26 in Lincoln, 86 in Minnehaha, 42 in Pennington and 33 in Union.

The counties with the highest total case counts are Minnehaha (25,924), Pennington (11,797), Lincoln (7,078), Brown (4,657) and Codington (3,596).

The SDDOH website reported midday Sunday that 44,073 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 37,575 people in South Dakota.

In Brookings County, 1,164 vaccine doses have been administered to 972 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
