23 new COVID-19 deaths, 266 new cases reported in South Dakota Sunday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 23 new COVID-19 deaths and 266 new cases in South Dakota Sunday.

Sixteen of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,299 total cases (12 new confirmed and four new probable): 3,025 of those people have recovered (18 new), with 242 active cases (down by two) and 32 deaths (no change). A total of 10,572 people (32 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 114 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There is one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Sunday.

Brookings County remains in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 105,544 (266 new – 190 confirmed plus 76 probable) as of midday Sunday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 4,662 are classified as active (down by 175 from Saturday). As of Sunday, 99,226 people have recovered (418 new), 6,063 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (24 new), 213 people are currently hospitalized (up by four) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,656 people have died (23 new).

The SDDOH website reports 285,878 people (636 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new deaths, 10 women and 13 men, are being reported in Brown (3), Buffalo, Clay, Davison, Lawrence (2), Lincoln, McPherson, Minnehaha (3), Oglala Lakota, Pennington (6), Todd and Union (2) counties. The age ranges of the deceased are two 50-59 years, three 60-69 years, eight 70-79 years and 10 in the 80-plus years category.

Increases in positive cases Sunday included, but are not limited to, 16 in Brookings County, 16 in Lincoln, 60 in Minnehaha and 28 in Pennington.

The counties with the highest total case counts are Minnehaha (26,399), Pennington (12,043), Lincoln (7,231), Brown (4,769) and Codington (3,661).

The SDDOH website reported midday Sunday that 56,625 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 46,796 people in South Dakota.

In Brookings County, 1,549 vaccine doses have been administered to 1,331 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
