475 new COVID-19 cases, two deaths reported in South Dakota in past week

BROOKINGS – The state on Wednesday reported 475 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in South Dakota in the past week. 

Sixteen of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

The data does not include at-home test results.

Brookings County cases have increased to 8,165 total cases (16 new confirmed and probable): 8,068 of those people have recovered (12 new) with 45 active cases (up by four) and 52 deaths (no change). A total of 223 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (one new), the state reported.

The Brookings hospital has no COVID-19 occupied hospital beds, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “high” community spread category. 

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 239,110 (475 new confirmed and probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the SDDOH.

Of the statewide cases, 1,246 are classified as active (up by 192 from last Wednesday). As of this Wednesday, 234,945 people have recovered (281 new), 10,819 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (21 new), 33 people are currently hospitalized (no change) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,919 people with COVID have died (two new).

The new deaths, both men, are being reported in Minnehaha and Pennington counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 40-49 years and one 70-79 years.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 1,235,148 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 524,824 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

In Brookings County, 48,539 vaccine doses have been administered to 20,511 people, the SDDOH website reports.

The SDDOH reports 72.9% of the state population age 5 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, 59.6% have completed their vaccination series, and 34.2% have received a booster dose.
