470 new COVID-19 cases, 10 new deaths reported in South Dakota

BROOKINGS – The state on Friday reported 470 new COVID-19 cases and 10 new deaths in South Dakota.

Eighteen of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 4,870 total cases (14 new confirmed and four new probable): 4,548 of those people have recovered (12 new) with 285 active cases (up by six) and 37 deaths (no change). A total of 145 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (one new), the state reported.

The Brookings hospital has one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “high” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 142,800 (346 new confirmed and 124 new probable) as of midday Friday, according to the SDDOH.

Of the statewide cases, 7,704 are classified as active (down by 21 from Thursday). As of Friday, 132,971 people have recovered (481 new), 7,290 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (27 new), 190 people are currently hospitalized (down by 13) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,125 people with COVID have died (10 new).

The new deaths, two women and eight men, are being reported in Charles Mix, Meade, Minnehaha, Pennington (4), Stanley, Tripp and Yankton counties. The age ranges of the deceased are two 40-49 years, two 50-59 years, three 60-69 years, two 70-79 years and one in the 80-plus years category.

The SDDOH website reported midday Friday that 778,075 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 418,610 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System.

In Brookings County, 30,620 vaccine doses have been administered to 16,636 people, the SDDOH website reports. As of Friday, 47.4% of the total county population has received at least one vaccine dose, and 55.8% of those 12 years and older in Brookings County have received at least one vaccine dose.

The SDDOH reports 63.8% of the state population age 12 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, and 58.2% of the state’s 12-and-older population has completed its vaccination series.
