BROOKINGS – A woman and a man, both in their 30s, were arrested on multiple charges Tuesday night after reports of physical fights, burglary, threats, hit-and-run, DUI and endangering a child, according to the Brookings Police.

The police were called shortly after 8:20 p.m. Tuesday to a residence in the 500 block of Eighth Street South for a physical fight between a man and a woman, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.

“They were fighting outside the residence,” he said.

Officers responded, but by then the people involved in the fight had left.

They received a call shortly after 8:30 p.m. from a woman in the 1900 block of Derdall Drive and she reported that she was being threatened.

“They also reported this same individual … that their vehicle had hit another vehicle in the area there,” Powers said.

The caller provided a description of the vehicle. While officers were getting to Derdall Drive, they spotted a vehicle that matched the description from the hit-and-run.

“They stopped it, found the female driver and a male passenger and there was also a 3-year-old child that was sleeping in the backseat that was not seated in child restraint,” Powers said.

“It was found that the female driver had been drinking. Sobriety tests were administered and it was determined that she was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage,” Powers said.

Upon further investigation, the officers found that the woman who had called from Derdall Drive lives in the 500 block of Eighth Street South, and the woman driver and the man riding with her had been at Eighth Street South where they had broken in and threatened the female caller earlier.

“Then the female victim and the male got into a fight outside the residence, at which point the female victim left the residence,” Powers said. “Then the female suspect and male suspect followed her to the 1900 block of Derdall Drive, at which point, the argument continued and where the threats were made there.”

Officers arrested the woman driver, a 38-year-old Brookings resident, on charges of DUI, open container, no child restraint, abuse or cruelty to a minor under age 7, first-degree burglary and simple assault. She was transported to the Brookings County Detention Center.

The man, a 33-year-old Brookings resident, was arrested on charges of ingesting a controlled substance and aiding and abetting first-degree burglary. He was also transported to the BCDC.

“The child was taken into custody and actually placed with (Department of Social Services),” Powers said.
