More snow forecasted for Brookings area

BROOKINGS – Hundreds of people did not heed the warnings to move vehicles off the streets after as much as six inches of snow fell in Brookings Thursday.

As a result, 211 vehicles were ticketed and towed Thursday night, said Sgt. Joel Perry of the Brookings Police.

“With the ban, you can’t park on the street, so if you get a ticket, you’re gonna get towed,” Perry said.

He’s not sure why people didn’t heed the warnings.

“I think they did a good job of getting (notice) out there,” Perry said, adding, “211, that’s a lot.”

The city’s alert for Thursday’s parking ban first went out about 11 a.m. Thursday and took effect at 9 p.m. Thursday. It was broadcast via text message and email with the city’s “Notify Me” service, along with website, television, radio, Facebook and Twitter announcements.

The City of Brookings issued a press release Friday reminding residents how to get emergency alert notifications via text message and email, if they want them.

“The City of Brookings website offers many online services including a Notify Me feature. Under this feature, you can sign up to be notified by email or text message when any of the following are issued:  emergency alerts (including snow parking bans), announcements and news, job postings, city calendar events, city council meeting agendas, bid postings and legal notices,” the press release said.

Residents who want to get alerts should go to www.cityofbrookings.org/list.aspx.

“Enter your email address and select the envelope icon to subscribe for an email notification and the cell phone icon for text message notification next to the items you would like to be notified about.”

Those who sign up for emergency alerts will receive an email or a text message when one of the following occurs:

• Snow ban has been declared

• A potential snow ban could be declared

• Snow removal procedures

• Emergency evacuations

• Any other emergency circumstances deemed necessary

“The city’s goal is to notify the public in a timely manner. By providing this online feature, the city can notify everyone in an instant,” the press release said.
