595 new COVID-19 cases, eight deaths reported in South Dakota in past week

BROOKINGS – The state on Wednesday reported 595 new COVID-19 cases and eight deaths in South Dakota in the past week. 

Twenty-eight of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

The data does not include at-home test results.

Brookings County cases have increased to 8,193 total cases (28 new confirmed and probable): 8,087 of those people have recovered (19 new) with 54 active cases (up by nine) and 52 deaths (no change). A total of 223 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (no change), the state reported.

The Brookings hospital has no COVID-19 occupied hospital beds, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “high” community spread category. 

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 239,704 (595 new confirmed and probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the SDDOH.

Of the statewide cases, 1,470 are classified as active (up by 224 from last Wednesday). As of this Wednesday, 235,307 people have recovered (362 new), 10,841 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (22 new), 30 people are currently hospitalized (down by three) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,927 people with COVID have died (eight new).

The new deaths, four females and four males, are being reported in Clark, Davison, Hand, Minnehaha (2) and Pennington (3) counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 60-69 years, one 70-79 years and six 80 years or older.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 1,240,849 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 525,569 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

In Brookings County, 48,731 vaccine doses have been administered to 20,534 people, the SDDOH website reports.

The SDDOH reports 73.1% of the state population age 5 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, 59.7% have completed their vaccination series, and 34.4% have received a booster dose.
