BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University had three online graduate programs ranked following a survey of online graduate programs by U.S. News & World Report. U.S. News only surveys programs housed in regionally accredited institutions whose programs are offered mostly or entirely online.

SDSU’s following programs were ranked:

• No. 70 (tie) in Best Online Master’s in Engineering Programs;

• No. 122 (tie) in Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs; and

• No. 134 (tie) in Best Online Master’s in Education Programs.

“South Dakota State University offers superior online programs that pride themselves on curriculum that is designed for quality interactions between faculty and students,” said Lindsey Hamlin, director of SDSU Continuing and Distance Education. “Graduates from our online programs are well-positioned for competitive careers, as shown by these rankings of our graduate programs in engineering, nursing and education.”

U.S. News believes that online learning is integral to all types of education, including higher education, and that consumers are hungry for information related to online degrees. In its ninth year of collecting data from distance education master’s and bachelor’s degree completion programs, the publication has been able to expand the range and depth of information. U.S. News also updated the methodology this year to give credit to schools that provide online help with course registration, admissions counseling and building a resume.

For the 2020 edition, U.S. News assessed more than 1,600 online degree programs‚ an all-time high. The rankings measure overall academic quality and are across varying disciplines such as business and nursing. New this year, U.S. News further ranked 242 programs across 18 more specialized focuses like MBA finance and nursing family practice.

Indicators specific to the Best Online Programs rankings include measures of services offered remotely and course delivery best practices. Ultimately, the Best Online Programs rankings measure whether online degree programs have academic standards commensurate with quality brick-and-mortar programs, properly adapted toward the unique pedagogy of distance education.
