All vehicles entered on Fourth of July, items stolen

BROOKINGS – Three different vehicles were broken into – one with a rock – on the Fourth of July, and items inside were stolen, according to Brookings Police.

The first vehicle was reported broken into at 8:38 a.m. in the 1200 block of Christine Avenue, said Lt. Marci Gebers of the BPD’s criminal investigations division.

“Someone made entry and stole the victim’s wallet, which was then located by an individual that resides in that neighborhood and returned to him,” Gebers said.

Six dollars were missing from the wallet, “but no other items were found to be stolen from the vehicle,” which had no damage reported, Gebers said.

The second break-in was reported at 8:44 a.m. in the 100 block of 12th Avenue South.

“This was the vehicle that had the rock thrown through the windshield. That’s how the suspect or suspects gained entry,” Gebers said.

Stolen from that vehicle was a light pink-colored clutch purse and its contents, which included a First Bank & Trust Visa card, a First Bank & Trust checkbook, Mastercard, a fuel card, two bottles of prescription medicines, and approximately $40 in cash.

“None of those items have been recovered at this time,” Gebers said.

“We believe that would have occurred between the hours of 2 a.m. and 8:40 a.m. on the Fourth,” she said.

The third break-in was reported at 3:11 p.m. in the 2200 block of Bluegill Avenue.

“I don’t have the details on what was stolen out of the vehicle yet. This report’s not complete yet,” Gebers said.
