BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 90 new positive coronavirus cases and no new deaths Saturday.

The number of South Dakotans who have tested positive for COVID-19 rose to 5,367 as of midday Saturday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Brookings County cases have risen to 22 positive tests (two new Saturday), and 16 of those people have recovered. There have been 926 negative tests in Brookings County as of Saturday, the state reported.

Of the 5,367 statewide cases, 1,029 are classified as active (down by four from Friday). So far, 4,273 people have recovered (94 new), 474 people have been hospitalized at some point (seven new), 93 people are currently hospitalized (up by 10), and 65 people have died.

There have been 50,091 total negative tests (2,005 new) in South Dakota.

The county with the most positive tests in South Dakota is Minnehaha, with 3,397 as of midday Saturday, up by 10 since Friday. Increases in positive cases Saturday also include, but are not limited to, 18 in Beadle County, four in Brown, eight in Clay, three in Davison, four in Lincoln, six in Lyman, 13 in Pennington, three in Todd and five in Union.

The actual number of infections in the state is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested and studies suggest people can be infected without feeling sick.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
