VOLGA – A new walk-up ice cream shop has opened in downtown Volga.
Cool as Ice opened on June 11, just in time for Old Timers Day. The shop, directly next to CC Bar and Grill on Kasan Avenue, serves up soft-serve ice cream in dishes and cones. Right now, they have three flavors – chocolate, vanilla, and twist – along with 15 different toppings.
“There was nothing on this side of the highway for kids to stop at,” owner Cade Cradduck said. “It’s between the Park and Rec and the pool, so it’s something for them to stop at.”
Cradduck, who also owns CC’s, said that his family had been kicking around the idea for an ice cream shop for a while. Once COVID hit, the Cradducks decided it was time to go into the ice cream business. They bought the building next door, a former sporting goods store, renovated it and bought equipment.
Since CC’s already had a food license, the process of getting Cool as Ice off the ground was actually quite simple. Before deciding on Cool as Ice, the Cradducks tossed around the idea of naming the shop, “The Sugar Shack.”
Cool as Ice is staffed primarily by high school students.
“I wanted to give them something to do during the summer,” Cradduck said. “So we have mainly all high school kids working there so they have a job working during the summer.”
Because of this, Cool as Ice will be open seasonally, closing in the fall once school starts back up.
So far, business has been good, according to Cradduck.
“We’ve been pretty busy so far.”
Cradduck hopes to expand the menu soon, as he is looking to add a Blizzard/Avalanche type option to the menu.
“Once everyone perfects the cone, we will work that in,” Cradduck said. “Hopefully by the end of the summer.”
Cool as Ice is open every day, from noon to 9 p.m. It is located at 125 Kasan Ave. in Volga.
