Abraham breaks school record in 800, Dolphin girls win Class B 4x800 relay at Howard Wood Dakota Relays

SIOUX FALLS – Bobcat freshman Ellie Abraham broke the school record in the 800-meter run during the 92nd annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Friday.

She finished in 2 minutes, 13.92 seconds to place fourth.

Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Jasmyne Cooper won the girls’ special event with a 2:12.14 clocking. Emily Kompelien (2:12.2), of Edina, Minn., and Taryn Ceglowski (2:12.38), of Salida, Colo., were second and third, respectively.

The previous Brookings record of 2:16.18 was set by Amy Jo Reuter in 2007.

Deubrook Area’s Shaylee DeBeer, Andrea Vandermeer, Josie Olsen and Cortney Bauman teamed to take first-place honors in the Class B 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:01.66.

Eden Prairie (Minn.)’s Denzel Brown won the boys’ special event – the 200 – in 21.36 seconds.

The Bobcat boys took eighth in the Class A 4x800 relay in 8:37.2.

College

South Dakota State won six events on Day 1 of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays.

Men

Josh Dotson, Zach Koosman and Alejandro Sanchez each found the top of the podium.

Dotson took the triple jump title with a mark of 49 feet, 3/4 inches.

Koosman cleared 7-0 1/4 to win the high jump.

Sanchez was victorious in the 800 with a 1:50.2 clocking.

Placing third for the Jackrabbits were Colton Bender in the hammer throw (188-11), Ephram Albrecht in the triple jump (45-2 1/2) and Landon Larson in the 200 (21.58).

Larson was also fourth in the 400 (48.65)

Logan Ammons (hammer throw - 175-9), Reagan Francome (pole vault - 16-1 1/4), Jack Winter (javelin - 143-9) and Jalen Williams (200 - 21.91) each placed fourth.

Riley Sears tied for fourth in the high jump (6-5).

J.J. Hejna finished fifth in the triple jump (43-11 1/4) and seventh in the high jump (6-3 1/4).

Cal Lawton was fifth in the 800 (1:52.14) and Brady Brockel took fifth in the 400 (49.17). Bryant Courter took sixth in the high jump (6-5) and Dru Kenny matched that finish in the 400 (49.17) while also taking sixth in the 200 (22.28). Mason Leiseth ended up seventh in the discus (152-4) and Adam Belhaj was seventh in the 400 (49.28).

Evan Hieber placed eighth in the high jump (6-3 1/4) and Austin Haushild, competing unattached, matched that finish in the discus (146-4). Anthony Bachmeier ended up eighth in the 400 (49.28).

Women

Monique Mack and Oksana Covey posted first-place finishes for the Jackrabbits.

Mack cleared 5-10 in the high jump to win the event.

Covey’s time of 2:08.58 was good enough to claim the 800 title.

Kayla McDonald was runner-up in both the 200 (24.65) and 400 (56.04).

Also inishing second were Silvia Zanini in the hammer throw (184-5), Micayla Ter Wee in the shot put (43-5 3/4) and Rachel Astleford in the javelin (116-10).

Astleford was also sixth in the shot put (40-2 3/4).

Abby Sudbeck (hammer throw - 176-0), Rachel Eickhoff (3,000-meter steeplechase - 11:45.18) and Jacleen Patters (200 - 25.2) each placed fourth. Patterson was also third in the 400 (56.23), while Savannah Dolezal was fourth (56.67), Vanessa Lane fifth (57.03) and Peyton VandeBrake seventh (58.78).

Kendra Dykstra wound up fifth in the 800 (2:12.69); Miatta Flemister-Smith crossed in sixth in the 200 (25.49); Chloe Holtz was seventh in the high jump (5-1) and Rachel Propst finished eighth in the 3,000 steeplechase (12:06.85).

Note: The men’s and women’s 5,000-meter runs were not yet completed at the Register’s deadline. Results were not immediately available from the boys’ pole vault or 3,200-meter run.
