SIOUX FALLS – Ellie Abraham led the Bobcats during the Nike Heartland Preview on Saturday at Yankton Trails.
She placed second in the girls’ 5K in a time of 18 minutes, 54.6 seconds.
Minntonka’s Sophie Whicher, the top-ranked runner in Class AA in Minnesota, won in 17:39.19.
Wilmar won the team title with 43 points, while Minnetonka (48) was second, Rapid City Stevens (93) third Sioux Falls O’Gorman (127) fourth and Rapid City Central (133) fifth.
Brookings took sixth with 150 team points.
Ainsley Powers placed 15th in 20:17.37.
Kayla Shoup (21:21.59) was 45th, Josie Bono (21:25.94) 48th and Mariah McKibben (21:31.65) 53rd. McKibben’s time was a personal best by 20 seconds.
Minnetonka won the boys’ team title with 25 points, while Sioux Falls Washington (65) was second and Rapid City Stevens (111) third. Brookings finished 11th with 269 points.
West Central’s Derick Peters took home medalist honors in the 5K with a 15:15.52 clocking. Minnetonka’s Adam Wilkinson (15:55.37) was runner-up.
The Bobcats’ Chuck Wang set a PR by 37 seconds, taking 24th in 17:13.63.
“He ran fantastic today,” said BHS coach Chris Gruenhagen.
Oscar Kavanagh took 45th in 17:50.34. Schaffer Vestal (18:30.35) was 70th, Casey Pedersen (19:19.95) 88th and Isaac Conrad (19:22.1) 89th.
“I’m really happy with the girls’ team finishing sixth out of 11 teams,” added Gruenhagen. “The boys continue to progress each week and I believe that will continue.”
Brookings competes in the Huron Invitational on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Broadland Creek.
