Abraham wins Nike Heartland Preview

SIOUX FALLS – Brookings junior Ellie Abraham picked up another victory Saturday, claiming first-place honors in the Nike Heartland Preview at Yankton Trail Park.

She posted a time of 18 minutes, 32.88 seconds in the 5K to win by more than 20 seconds.

Willmar’s Heidi Schmitz was runner-up in 18:54.54. Teammate’s Leah Hansen (19:10.25) and Amel Dayib (19:14.14) were third and fourth, respectively.

Sturgis’ Kylee Bennett (19:14.19) completed the top five.

Deubrook Area’s Josie Olsen placed 11th with a time of 19:43.52.

The Cardinals cruised to the team title with 34 points.

Minnetonka (69 points), Custer (131), Rapid City Stevens (135) and Sioux Falls Washington (136) rounded out the top five.

The Bobcats finished with 142 points in sixth.

Ainsley Powers crossed in 27th with a 20:27.52 clocking.

Kayla Shoup (20:35.52) took 31st, Jai Reineke (20:55.88) 34th and Brooke Wika (22:55.81) 86th to round out the team tally.

Liz Schaar (24:01.73) ended up 101th.

Boys

Minnetonka won the team title with 50 points and Lincoln North Star (74) was second.

West Central’s Braden Peters was medalist in the 5K with a 16:02.93 clocking.

Minnetonka’s Max Lauerman placed second in 16:09.22 and Lincoln North Star’s Liem Chot (16:12.51) took third.

Brookings’ Daniel Messerli finished 93rd in 19:30.15 and Quintin Eck ended up 99th with a time of 20:07.31.
