Abraham wins Russ Strande

BROOKINGS – The Mankato West girls and Harrisburg boys ran to team titles at Thursday’s Russ Strande Invitational at Edgebrook Golf Course.

Individually, Brookings’ Ellie Abraham took medalist honors after covering the 5K course in 18 minutes, 49.78 seconds while West Central’s Carter Ulrich won the boys’ race in 17:48.72.

Mankato West finished with 22 points as Harrisburg counted 36 and West Central totaled 85 for third in the girls’ team chase.

Harrisburg edged Brookings, 26-33, for the honors on the boys’ side.

Individually for the Bobcat girls, Ainsley Powers placed third in 21:15.81; Kayla Shoup crossed in 21:38.72 for sixth overall; and Elizabeth Schaar finished 20th in 23:51.31.

“The four girls’ varsity were impressive – Ellie continues to run well, totally solo – we’re looking forward to some meets later in the season when she’s got some competition because she ran away with it today,” said Bobcat head coach Chris Gruenhagen. “Ainsley had another big performance – she just continues to build on the confidence after a freshman year where she missed some meets, and now she is making up for that lost time or lack of varsity racing and it’s starting to show that she’s getting more confident with what she can do.”

“And a couple of steps behind her was Kayla – we’ve got a very good crew of varsity girls that are running very well.”

For the boys, Charlie Wang placed second in 17:59.88 while Oscar Kavanagh was fourth in 18:18.41. Schaffer Vestal finished seventh overall in 18:39.31 as Casey Pedersen and Quintin Eck were 15th and 16th in respective times of 19:31.97 and 19:49.38.

“Boys’ varsity – it was kind of dual meet with Harrisburg – they ran well and I was very impressed with how they competed in the last mile to 2k,” Gruenhagen said. “We’ve been pushing Casey to take that risk and I felt like he really did that tonight – really happy with how he performed; he moved up – he probably moved up four or five places in the last couple of kilometers.”

On Thursday, the Bobcats travel to Watertown for the Arrow Invitational.
