BROOKINGS – Rapid City Stevens junior Adam Salter was the lone player to break par on a chilly and breezy Monday and the Raiders grabbed a five-stroke lead in the team standings following the first round of the Class AA State Boys’ Golf Tournament at Brookings Country Club.

Salter fired a 1-under 71 and holds a two-shot advantage.

He bogeyed the third hole, birdied the fifth and sixth, bogeyed the ninth and 10th, and birdied the 11th and 18th.

Stevens posted a team tally of 302.

Sioux Falls Lincoln sits in second at 307.

Spearfish (312), Sioux Falls Roosevelt (315) and Yankton (317) round out the top five.

Defending-champion Sioux Falls O’Gorman is tied for sixth with Brandon Valley at 326.

The Bobcats shot 341 and are in 11th.

“Well, we are right in the mix of things after the first day,” said BHS coach Andy Lee. “There were some positives and negatives from today that hopefully we can learn from for Tuesday.

“We are down to one more day, which seems crazy; but I know our guys will come out and give us a chance like they always have.”

The Lynx’s Jackson Faber carded a 1-over 73 and is in second place. He made five birdies and six bogeys.

The Patriots’ Ryan Neff is another shot back at 74. His round included four birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey.

The Bucks’ Michael Frick and Simon Hacecky both shot 75 and are tied for fourth. Frick placed sixth last season.

The Raiders’ Ben Daane, the Spartans’ Kevin Kolb and the Patriots’ Max Honner are tied for sixth following rounds of 76.

Bobcat senior Drew Cole is among a six-way tie for ninth at 77.

He opened the day with a birdie on No. 10. Cole made a double-bogey at the 12th, but bounced back with a birdie on No. 13 and an eagle 3 – the only one in the field – at the 14th.

He remained 2-under with three consecutive pars, but bogeyed the 18th for a 1-under 35 on the back nine.

Cole recorded a triple-bogey 8 on No. 1 but quickly bounced back with a birdie at the second. He closed out the round by making a double-bogey at the sixth and bogeys on Nos. 7 and 9, giving him a 6-over 42 on the front.

Also shooting 77 in the opening round were Stevens’ Payton Phares, Spearfish’s Jesse Sacrison, Roosevelt’s Jack Lundin and Garett Everson, and Harrisburg’s Gavin Hatch.

Lundin, a junior, was runner-up a year ago.

Jonah Swartz, who tied for third in 2017, shot 78 to round out the Raiders’ team score. He’s tied for 15th with the Patriots’ Luke Honner.

Completing Lincoln’s team tally, Jack Hilgenberg fired a 79. He is in a tie for 17th with Stevens’ Ryan Nolan, Spearfish’s Sam Grout, O’Gorman’s Phil Enderson and William Sanford, and Sturgis’ Tice McVay.

Brookings’ Jesse Roberts shot 82 and is tied for 35th. He birdied his first hole of the day – the 10th.

Alec Rice is tied for 64th after shooting 89.

Justin Kortan shot 93 and is tied for 77th to complete the Bobcats’ Round 1 total.

Also for Brookings, Ryan Treiber (94) is tied for 79th and Jordan Svobodny (95) is tied for 82nd.

The second round began this morning at 9.
