Alexandria, Madison advance at Class B state baseball tourney

MITCHELL – Alexandria, the defending Class B champs, and Madison both punched tickets to a quarterfinal showdown with wins on Wednesday night at Cadwell Park.

The Angels overwhelmed the Canton Aces, 15-7, as the Broncos scored three in the eighth to down Four Corners, 6-3.

Alex and Madison square off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.


• Alexandria 15, Canton 7

The Aces jumped out to an 8-2 lead after three innings and sealed the deal with a four-run eighth as Tyson Gau went the distance on the mound to earn the complete-game win.

Gau allowed five earned runs on 13 hits and three walks with eight strikeouts and helped himself out with a 4-for-4 night at the plate with a home run and a double as he drove in three runs.

John Greicar added three hits, including a double and triple, while Pierce Smith plated three runs with a single and double.

Chris Marek and Jerrod Zens also doubled and drove in two runs for Alexandria.

Thad Meister led Canton’s attack with three hits and a pair of RBIs.

Jordan Sehr singled, tripled and drove in one as Alex Richards had two hits and two RBIs.

Jake Roskam and Nick Sehr added a pair of hits.

Blake Beard suffered the loss after giving up six runs on six hits and two walks in the first two innings.

Tyler Maxwell tossed five innings of middle relief, allowing five runs – three earned – on six hits and a walk with a strikeout.

Roskam threw the eighth and gave up four runs – two earned – on two hits and a pair of passes.

• Madison 6, Four Corners 3

The Broncos built a 3-0 lead with a pair of fourth-inning runs and a single tally in the fifth before Four Corners tied the game with three in the sixth.

Madison used a walk and a two-base error to score its first run before Brian Miller, who had reached on the error, scored on a stolen base to make it 2-0 through four.

In the fifth, Trevor Johnson singled; advanced to second on a wild pitch; and scored on Danny Flahie’s RBI double.

Cooper Carter and Brad Hand hit back-to-back singles to open the sixth and both moved up a base on Justin Allen’s groundout. Nathan Hainy doubled to plate Carter and Hand before advancing to third on an error. Justin Lester’s sacrifice fly to left scored Hainy for the 3-3 tie.

In the eighth, a pair of walks, along with a fielder’s choice and a hit batter set the table for Flahie’s three-run triple as the Broncos took the lead for good.

Nick Bird picked up the win after tossing two innings of middle relief and not allowing a run on a hit and a walk with a strikeout.

Brady Banse earned the save after striking out the first two batters he faced and inducing a pop fly to center for the final out in the ninth.

Hunter Jamison threw the first six and gave up three runs – two earned – on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Adam Kaus went the first 6 2/3 for Four Corners, giving up three runs – one earned – on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Jeremy Hand suffered the loss as he allowed two runs – both unearned – with one walk in 2/3 of an inning.

Justin Alllen got the final two outs after giving up one earned run on one hit and a walk with one strikeout.
