All hands on deck

BROOKINGS – Think of it as a rite of passage combined with organized bedlam and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what Friday’s freshmen-move-into-the-dorms day on the South Dakota State University campus was all about.

But before the move-in even started, getting onto campus was a major challenge as traffic backed up at the Interstate 29 off-ramps along Sixth Street (U.S. Highway 14) leading into Brookings.

Once on campus and parked near the residence halls, an all-hands effort of faculty, staff, student Meet State volunteers, parents and the incoming freshmen themselves got underway. All the necessities of college and then some of the comforts of home were toted into the residence halls, working from the fourth floors down.

One of the Meet Me student volunteers was Robin Doerr, a fifth-year senior from Aberdeen. “I’ve never done helping people move in,” she said, smiling as she got a loaded golf cart ready to roll, “but I’ve been on the other side of things. It’s really nice.”
