Private funeral service for Allan “Bud” Anderson, 90, Mansfield will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 17, 2020, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. in Aberdeen with Pastor Bret Bierman officiating. The service will be livestreamed through his obituary page on our website. Burial at 3 p.m., Friday at Toronto Cemetery, Toronto, SD with military honors by Erickson-Olson American Legion Post 81, Toronto. Allan died Saturday, July 11 at his home in Mansfield.

Allan LeRoy Anderson was born on Aug. 26, 1929 at Hendricks, MN to Gilbert and Nathalie (Molstad) Anderson. He grew up and attended school in Toronto, SD area. On August 15, 1951 he entered the US Army where he served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on May 14, 1953. All the brothers served in the military with five of them in WWII at the same time. One died in battle. On October 25, 1954 he married Neta Martha Fish at Tyler, MN. They made their home in Toronto until May of 1955 when they moved to Fort Wayne, IN for two years. In 1957 they moved back to South Dakota. They moved to Mansfield in 1961 where he managed the Elevator and later became the Postmaster until he retired.

Allan was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mansfield and American Legion Post 289, Mansfield. 

He coached youth baseball for many years as well as girls softball. He enjoyed the newspaper’s daily crossword puzzle and usually had that done by 5:30 am. 

He loved the outdoors, whether it was hunting in the earlier years or taking care of the lawn and garden. 

He was famous for his ability to grow an incredible tomato crop. He talked often about how he grew up without electricity, plumbing and working with horse drawn equipment. He especially enjoyed sharing these stories to his grandchildren inspiring them to be hard workers.

Grateful for having shared Allan’s life are his children, Cathy Sommer, Lidgerwood, ND, David Anderson, Yakima, WA, Carol (Brad) Merkel, Forbes, ND, Randy Anderson (Val Parrett) Fargo, ND, Cheryl Anderson, Aurora, CO, Colleen (Wayde) Anderson, Sisseton, SD and Janine (Phil) Blosser, Elkhart, IN, grandchildren, Jeffrey Johnson, Christopher Onkka, Kari (Adam) Ehrk, Laura (Jon Bowen) Anderson, Ryan Anderson (Alison Mettler), Eric Fink, Nathan (Jessica) Fink, Justin Fink, Shana Gast, Nicholas Gast, Michele Fritz and Stephanie Fritz, great-grandchildren, Layne, Bryce, Peighton, Hudson, Meredith, and Leah and sister, Alice Falken, Hendrick, MN.

Preceding Allan in death are his wife of sixty-three years, Neta Anderson, parents, Gilbert and Nathalie Anderson, brothers, Roland, Willis, Arnold “Raymond”, Ernest, Jarvin, Norman, sisters, Arlene Gronseth and Grace Melland.
