Altrusa Brookings donates to ‘Christmas, Kids and Cops’

BROOKINGS – Sgt. Joe Fishbaugher accepts a $100 donation on behalf of the Brookings Police Foundation to use for the “Christmas, Kids and Cops” program from Joan Baker, Altrusa International Brookings president.

Law enforcement officers from the city of Brookings as well as the county and some state patrol officers take kids and their families shopping for the holidays. “Christmas, Kids and Cops” not only helps families meet the financial demands during the holidays, they also have a positive experience with the youth.

Every year the Brookings Altrusa organization holds a Literacy Luncheon in January with the proceeds directed toward specific service projects. These service projects are identified by early fall and are often associated with the speaker or their topic. Altrusa is distributing some of the proceeds before the event in January since the cops will shop with the kids and their families in early December. Additional proceeds will go to the SDSU Criminal Justice Club and Brookings County Drug Court.

Altrusa is excited to bring Chad Sheehan to Brookings to serve as the luncheon speaker. Sheehan is a 23-year veteran of law enforcement. Since his retirement in 2016 from the Sioux City, Iowa, police department, Sheehan has fully devoted his time to the “S.A.V.E. Yourself” program. “S.A.V.E. Yourself” has been taught to more than 150,000 people from 26 states (including Daktronics & Brookings city and county employees).

Sheehan will provide information to civilians in the area of surviving violence with an emphasis on the threat posed by workplace/school violence and today’s active killer. To learn more about Sheehan and “S.A.V.E. Yourself,” go to Sheehan Strategic Solutions website,  https://www.sheehansolutions.com/.

Altrusa members are starting to sell tickets for the Literacy Luncheon (Jan. 18, 2019). Any Altrusa member they can sell a ticket, or contact Joan Baker (joanbaker@itctel.com, 693-8768) or Madeleine Rose  (rosem@swiftel.net).
