Amateur baseball: Brookings Cubs dominate Volga Cormorants in seven innings

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Cubs improved to 2-0 on the season as they cruised to 13-1 victory over the Volga Cormorants in seven innings on Sunday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings held a no-hitter until the sixth inning and the Cormorants had just three hits on the night. At the plate, the Cubs had 12 hits of their own.

The Cubs broke a 0-0 tie with four runs in the third inning. Jamison Honkomp led off the inning with a double and Austin Koenig hit him home with a double of his own in the next at-bat. Brookings then scored a run on two errors and an RBI double from Rhett Zelinsky.

Brookings would add seven more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Honkomp hit an RBI double for the first run of the inning and he later scored on a wild pitch. Chase McDaniel then hit a two-run double. Honkomp came up again later in the inning and hit a two-run single to make it 11-0 heading into the fifth.

The Cubs final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the fifth. McDaniel hit an RBI double and Craig Lasley drew a bases loaded walk to make it 13-0.

Volga’s lone run of the game came in the top of the sixth when Dylen Milton scored on a wild pitch.

Jake Ammann pitched the first four innings and was awarded the win. He gave up no runs and no hits, while striking out seven batters and walking two. JaColby Anderson pitched one scoreless inning and struck two batters out. Henry Hammrich pitched the final two innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Honkomp was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and McDaniel went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Zelinsky went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Koenig went 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Brookings plays at Lake Norden on Wednesday at 8 p.m. The Cormorants host Volga on Sunday at 5 p.m.
