Amber Ann Hartmann, 80, of Brookings, died Monday, April 3, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brookings. Burial is at 11 a.m. Monday at Riverview Cemetery in Chamberlain.  Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.  Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Amber Ann (Clough) Hartmann was born on June 5, 1936, in Pierre to Ralph Robert Clough and Georgia Amber Rynor.

While she grew up in Chamberlain, Amber also spent a great deal of time with her grandparents at Interior. While she was in grade school she had been baptized at the local Congregational Church. During her junior  and senior years in high school Amber worked at Studebaker-Packard Dealership and helped the owners with their books and helped set up their parts inventory.

She graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1954 and then enrolled at South Dakota State University, where she received an associate’s degree in sociology and secretarial work.

While at SDSU she was set up on a blind date to meet Alvin Eugene Hartmann. They were married on June 17, 1956, in Chamberlain. About this time Amber became a confirmed member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, of Argo Township near White. They had four sons, Allan, Arvin, Arlan and Andrew. Alvin and Amber began farming north of Brookings in 1956 and did so for about 60 years before recently renting their land to others.

In 1971 Alvin and Amber and their sons joined Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brookings.  Alvin died March 8, 2011, after a two-year battle with cancer. Amber continued to live on the farm where she enjoyed her cats and her miniature ponies. She was also proud to have been a West River gal.

In the spring of 2015 Amber’s house on the farm caught fire and burned down. By God’s grace Amber’s life was spared and a short time later Amber moved to Brookings into an apartment. This also permitted her to become a regular participant in a Thursday morning Bible study at Our Savior Lutheran Church.

About a year ago Amber was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and began palliative chemo treatments which were stopped a couple of months ago.

She is survived by her sons, Allan (Pam) of Cleveland, N.D.; Arvin of Portland, Maine; Arlan (Debbie) of Fresno, Calif., and Andrew (Darla) of Fruit Heights, Utah; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Duane and Helen Hartmann of Sioux Falls and Larry and Vanita Hartmann of San Diego, as well as nieces and nephews.

Amber was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin.
