Ammann walkoff lifts ‘Chutes over Yankton

BROOKINGS – Jake Ammann’s walkoff single in the eighth inning lifted the ‘Chutes over Yankton 6-5 in a Junior Legion baseball game Monday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Max Struck got it going with a two-out walk. Max Kjelden reached on a fielder’s choice and Struck was safe at second on the play. Jamison Honkomp drew a walk to load the bases.

Ammann came up next and singled sharply to the left side to drive in Struck for the winning run. He finished 2-for-5.

Henry Hammrich threw a scoreless top of the eighth, working around two walks and a hit while recording one strikeout, to earn the pitching win.

Hammrich went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a triple to lead off the third. He scored on an error on Struck’s batted ball.

Post 12 pulled even in the fourth.

Trevor Fitzgerald singled and stole second before sprinting home on Tony McGlone’s one-out single.

Ammann, Kyle Bauer and Ashton Witte singled to open the bottom of the fourth. Mason Bebensee plated Ammann with a sacrifice fly with one away.

Yankton countered with a pair of runs in the fifth.

Joe Gokie walked and stole second. Cameron Zahrbock followed with an RBI hit and also swiped second. Jayden Lightner’s one-out single gave the visitors a 3-2 lead.

Fitzgerald drew a base on balls to get the sixth frame underway. McGlone walked with one out. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Fitzgerald scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.

Post 74 rebounded with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning.

Trey Svennes singled with one away and Wes Koenig walked. Bebensee reached on an error, which allowed Svennes to score. Hammrich followed with a hit.

Struck picked up his second RBI of the game with a single. Kjelden’s sacrifice fly drove in Bebensee to put the ‘Chutes ahead 5-4.

In the seventh, Zahrbock walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Austin Wagner’s sacrifice fly to knot things up at 5-all.

Zahrbock finished 2-for-4 with a double. Fitzgerald was 2-for-3.

Bebensee, who started on the mound for Brookings, gave up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk in five innings. Kjelden surrendered two runs on four walks with one strikeout in two innings.

Kaden Luellman took the loss after allowing one run on one hit and four walks in 1 2/3 innings. Starter Bradley Howe gave up five runs – two earned – on eight hits and two walks in six innings.

Brookings (15-13) plays a doubleheader at Marshall, Minnesota, on Thursday.
