Area football: Sharks beat Hawks in double OT

Five area teams were in action in football on Friday night. Iroquois/Lake Preston outlasted  Colman-Egan in double overtime, Estelline/Hendricks blew out Waverly-South Shore, Flandreau held on to beat Jim River and Sioux Valley dominated Baltic.

 Iroquois/Lake Preston 20, Colman-Egan 18 (OT)

The Sharks outlasted the Hawks in an overtime thriller, picking up a victory in Iroquois on Friday night.

The game started quietly as the Hawks and Sharks spent the first three quarters deadlocked in a scoreless tie. Jack Mousel put the Hawks on the board with a one-yard touchdown pass to Ben Zwart with 8:49 left in the fourth quarter before Jake Larson’s one-yard touchdown run with 3:11 remaining to tie the game at 6-6.

That sent the game to overtime where Voelker gave the Hawks the lead with a 10-yard touchdown run. Haydon Shurson’s two-yard touchdown run tied the game at 12 before Voelker ran for his second touchdown of the night, giving the Hawks an 18-12 lead.

With the game on the line, Josh McMasters found Riley Greene for a six-yard touchdown to tie the game up before a two-point conversion run by Larson gave the Sharks the victory.

The win was a gritty one for the Sharks, who were outgained by the Hawks 323-216 on the night. Voelker posted a game-high 190 rushing yards for Colman-Egan while Larson ran for 91 yards and Shurson ran for 84 yards.

The Sharks finish the regular season with a 1-6 record while the Hawks fell to 0-6. The Hawks will travel to Platte-Geddes on Friday night.

 Estelline/Hendricks 63, Waverly-South Shore 18

The Redhawks dominated the Coyotes in Estelline, using 36 first-half points to run to victory on Friday night.

Mattix Hausman was the catalyst for the Redhawks, throwing for 139 yards with all three touchdowns in the first quarter. Hausman also added 58 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground as part of a rushing effort that racked up 314 rushing yards on the night.

Joseph McAninch led the Redhawks with 153 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries and a 16-yard touchdown reception while Cade Ching added 90 yards and three touchdowns on six carries and had two catches for 53 yards and one touchdown. Trey Cass and Braxton Saathoff also caught touchdowns for the Redhawks.

Troy Kneeland was a bright spot for the Coyotes throwing for 142 yards, a pair of touchdowns and an interception while Carson Meadors paced Waverly-South Shore with 22 yards on the ground. Colton Kranz also added three catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns while Cody Thompson made two grabs for 53 yards.

The Redhawks improved to 5-2 with their fifth straight victory and will travel to Warner on Friday night. The Coyotes fell to 0-6 with the loss and will host Castlewood on Friday night.

 Flandreau 21, Jim River 19

The Fliers improved to 3-4 on the year after defeating the Trappers at the Jim Woehl Athletic Complex in Menno on Friday night. Flandreau scored all 21 points in the first half to take a 21-7 lead into halftime and held on for the victory.

Lane Johanson led the way for Flandreau with eight carries for 43 yards and a touchdown and added one catch for 15 yards. Karter Headrick had one carry for 16 yards and Ethan Hoffman added 10 carries for 26 yards.

Quarterback Paul Parsley 10-of-27 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns while Hoffman caught three passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. Kolby Peters caught two passes for 35 yards and a touchdown while Tison Burggraff had three catches for 32 yards.

Hoffman led the Fliers with 11 total tackles and Peters had 10 tackles and a sack. Caleb Pitsenberger and Jonathan Schrader also notched a sack in the victory.

The Fliers will host Sioux Valley on Oct. 14 while Jim River, who fell to 3-4 on the year, will host Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Friday night.

 Sioux Valley 55, Baltic 0

The Cossacks improved to 4-3 with the win and are in 12th place in the Class 11B standings. If the season ended today, they would play at Ridgewater-Emery/Ethan in the playoffs. The Cossacks lost to the Seahawks 36-32 on Sept. 16. There were no stats available for this game. Sioux Valley will travel to Flandreau on Oct. 14. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs fell to 0-7 with the loss and will host Sisseton on Oct. 14.
