Area GBB: Divers, Hawks win; Fliers lose at Hanson Classic

The Lake Preston Divers earned a win on Saturday at the Dakota Valley Conference Border Classic held in Colman, while Flandreau dropped its first game of the year in the night cap of the 39th annual Hanson Classic in Mitchell in area girls’ basketball.

 Lake Preston 54, Dawson-Boyd 48

COLMAN – Hadlee Holt scored 28 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as Lake Preston defeated Dawson-Boyd, 54-48, as part of the DVC Girls’ Basketball Border Classic held Saturday in Colman.

Marissa Rober added 13 points along with five assists and three steals for the Divers.

Faith Steffensen chipped in with seven points but ripped down 17 rebounds and had seven steals.

Dawson-Boyd was led by Kate Dahl with 14 points, Laney Bartunek with 12, and Paige Conover with 11.

The Divers trailed 12-2 after the first quarter but outscored Dawson-Boyd 13-4 in the second quarter to get within a point at halftime. Lake Preston then used a 39-32 second half to pick up the win.

Lake Preston (5-5) travels to Arlington Thursday for a matchup with the Cardinals. The girls’ game tips at 6:15 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow.

 Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley 55, Elkton-Lake Benton 42

COLMAN – Rachael Krog just missed out on a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds, but the Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley Wolverines picked up a 55-42 win over the Lady Elks during the DVC Girls’ Basketball Border Classic on Saturday in Colman.

Tevan Erickson scored 10 points and had four steals, while Kylie Ramlo pulled down 14 rebounds to go along with nine points.

C-G-B was led by Jessica Moberg with 24 points and Grace Cardwell with 10.

The Lady Elks held a over two-to-one advantage on the glass, securing 47 rebounds to the Wolverines’ 22.

Elkton-Lake Benton (3-7) travels to Colman-Egan Thursday night to take on the Hawks at 7:30 p.m.

 Colman-Egan 63, Pipestone Area, Minn. 54

COLMAN – Mackenzie Hemmer scored a season-high 36 points on 13-of-18 shooting, and grabbed 12 rebounds, as the Colman-Egan girls’ basketball team moved to 8-1 with a win over Pipestone Area, Minn., 63-54, during the Dakota Valley Conference Border Classic held Saturday in Colman.

The Hawks outscored Pipestone 26-2 in the first quarter to post what would be an insurmountable lead despite the Arrows outscoring Colman-Egan in the second, third, and fourth quarters.

Hailey Larson was the only other Hawk in double-figures with 11 points.

Pipestone’s Aubrea Kor led the Arrows with 29 points on 12-of-21 shooting.

Colman-Egan shot 48 percent (21-of-44) for the game and attempted 31 free throws in the contest, making 18.

Pipestone shot 40 percent, 20-of-50, and 7-of-22 from long range.

The Hawks held a slim 32-31 advantage on the boards.

Colman-Egan travels to Garretson on Jan. 17 for a matchup with the Blue Dragons.

 Corsica-Stickey 58, Flandreau 47

MITCHELL – Class A’s top-ranked Flandreau Fliers girls’ basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday at the Hanson Classic in Mitchell at the Corn Palace, a 58-47 setback to Class B’s second-ranked team, Corsica-Stickney, in the finale of the 39th playing of the annual event.

The Jaguars opened a five-point lead at halftime, 27-22, then outscored the Fliers 16-8 in the third quarter and led by 13 as the game entered the fourth quarter.

Both teams only used six players in the contest between highly ranked teams.

The Fliers were led by Claire Sheppard who posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Lizzie Pavlis also scored 15 points and had five rebounds, and Maria Parsley added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Corsica-Stickey was led by Rachel Gerlach with 17 points and five rebounds, while Avery Broughton logged a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Fliers only turned the basketball over five times to 16 for the Jaguars, but Flandreau shot just 26 percent (16-of-61) from the field and 4-of-16 from beyond the three-point arc.

Corsica-Stickey shot 54 percent for the game, 21-of-39, and made 5-of-10 attempts from long range.

The Jaguars out-rebounded Flandreau 36-33, but the Fliers did bring down 17 offensive rebounds in the game.

Flandreau (6-1) hosts Deuel tonight as part of a doubleheader with the Fliers’ boys’ team.

 Lennox 44, Deubrook Area 43

MITCHELL – An 18-10 fourth quarter propelled the Lennox Orioles to a narrow one-point win over Deubrook Area in the first game of the 39th annual girls’ basketball Hanson Classic held at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Deubrook Area did not record a field goal in the final 4:33 of the game.

The Dolphins opened a 23-13 lead at the half but could not withstand a second-half surge by the Orioles.

Emma Scheffield led a balanced scoring effort for Deubrook Area as the only player in double-figures with 10 points.

Emma Vandermeer added nine points, while Miranda Moravetz and Skyla Petersen each scored seven and Carley Landmark chipped in six points.

Petersen also had six rebounds, while Vandermeer dished out four assists.

Ryan Hanssen led the Orioles with 13 points, while Andie Peters had 11 and Drew Kuyper scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Dolphins shot 33 percent (13-of-40) from the field but just made one of seven attempts from long range.
Lennox was 17-of-45 (38 percent) and 6-of-23 from deep.

The Orioles made just 4-of-8 free throws, while the Dolphins converted 16 of their 22 trips to the free throw line.

Deubrook Area (6-3) heads to Alcester-Hudson for a doubleheader tonight.
