Area teams compete well at Howard Wood-Dakota Relays

SIOUX FALLS – It was all about the competition as the 92nd annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays took place under sunny skies on Saturday.

Bobcat freshman Ellie Abraham came off a fourth-place finish in Friday’s special 800-meter event with a sixth-place time of 5 minutes, 5.07 seconds to place sixth in the 1,600-meter run ­– the top time for a South Dakota girl, as Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Courtney Klatt placed eighth 5:05.50.

Deubrook Area won the B girls’ 4x400-meter relay as Shaylee DeBeer, Ashley Vandermeer, Josie Olsen and Cortney Bauman teamed to cross in 4:11.73 while the Colman-Egan boys posted a time of 3:29.06 to edge Castlewood (3:30.32).

The Hawks’ winning squad was comprised of Walker Olivier, Bodee Groos, Kade Groos and Kaden Eng.

Olivier also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.28 seconds and added a fifth-place finish of 15.42 in the 110-meter hurdles.

The Colman-Egan foursome of Devin Lohr, Bodee Groos, Kade Groos and Olivier placed second in the 4x100-meter relay in 44.75, just off the pace of Chester Area, which won in the event in a meet-record mark of 44.68.

The Hawks also finished second in the 4x200 relay in 1:33.46 as Chester Area won the event in a meet-record time of 1:33.21.

The Dolphin girls also placed second in the sprint medley relay with a time of 4:21.25, less than a second behind Viborg-Hurley’s winning time of 4:20.40. Lake Preston was fifth in 4:29.67, while Arlington placed seventh in 4:33.90.

The ‘Cats placed third in the sprint medley with a mark of 4:11.52 as Brandon Valley took the event with a 4:09.27 and Bismarck Legacy was second in 4:10.74.

Individually, Oscar Kavanagh led the Bobcats in the boys’ 1,600 with a time of 4:41.82, which was good for 46th, while Greg Opdahl placed 64th in 4:49.10 and Chuck Wang was 74th in 4:57.37.

In the girls’ 1,600, Ainsley Powers placed 65th in 5:43.68 and Bastienne Baggett finished 71st in 5:52.60.

In the girls’ 300-meter hurdles, Bauman placed 16th in 48.24 seconds, while Amanda Kees of Brookings was 23rd in 48.94; Lake Preston’s Karley DeKnikker was 40th in 49.68; and Colman-Egan’s Mackenzie Hemmer finished 59th in 51.57.

Lake Preston’s Brock Bumann posted a time of 44.97 seconds to place 56th in the boys’ 300 hurdles.

In the boys’ discus, Dillon Jensen of Brookings placed 11th with a toss of 147 feet while Oldham-Ramona/Rutland’s Riston Wolf put the shot 44 feet, 6 3/4 inches for 36th.
