The Quarriers topped Sioux Valley 72-60 in the marquee matchup to conclude the event.

Dell Rapids St. Mary 58, Castlewood 55, OT

Arlington’s Devon Heuer and Garretson’s Trevor Fiegen both made a run at the scoring record, dropping in 33 points apiece; however, the mark still stands at 36, held by Elkton’s Matt Olson (2001).

Dell Rapids’ Logan Heim corralled a classic-record 19 rebounds, breaking the previous mark of 17 set by Castlewood’s Kraig Engen in 2006 and matched by Flandreau’s Russ Hendrickson in 2008.

 Arlington 59, Deuel 49

Devon Heuer dropped in 33 points to earn MVP honors and Arlington awoke from its winter slumber after halftime to beat Deuel in the matchup of Cardinals.

Arlington was up 11-9 after a quarter but Deuel used a 10-3 spurt late in the second to take a 30-23 advantage into the break.

“In the first half we weren’t pushing the ball up the floor; in the second half we got some energy, got the ball up the sidelines and just got it up-tempo,” said Arlington coach Michael Parry. “In the first half we were just dead. It felt like a typical Christmas game.”

Heuer put up 27 second-half points, including 12 in the third quarter and 15 in the fourth.

Arlington outscored Deuel 18-7 in the third to move ahead 41-37.

Deuel twice pulled within two points early in the fourth, the latter occurrence coming at 49-47 with 4:53 showing on the clock.

Heuer iced the game after that.

The senior hit two free throws with 2:49 remaining; scored in the paint with 2:35 to go following Trey Ramstad’s offensive rebound; and then, hit a 3-pointer with 2:00 left to put his team on top 56-47. He finished it off with another trey with 39 seconds to play.

Heuer finished 12-of-23 from the field, including 3-of-6 from long range, and 6-of-8 at the foul line while adding five rebounds, three steals, two assists and a pair of blocks.

“I think he’s averaging 23 a game – he’s an excellent athlete and he’s shooting really well right now,” added Parry. “He’s a tough matchup for a lot of teams and we hope he continues that way. We’re just trying to develop our other guys to play with him and get going with the intensity. We were lacking intensity in the first half today and luckily Devon carried us all day.”

Casey Stegeman contributed 12 points and seven boards. Trey Ramstad had eight points, eight rebounds and five dimes.

Arlington forced 23 turnovers and committed 10.

Deuel’s Scott Lovre posted his second double-double in as many days with 19 points and 14 boards. Kellan Benck added 13 markers and nine boards.

Deuel (1-5) plays host to Webster Area on Thursday and Arlington (3-1) takes on Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday in Oldham.

Brandon Trygstad buried a 3-ball with 34 seconds remaining to tie the score at 38-all and then made a free throw with 1 second left to lift the Raiders over the Redhawks in a showdown of Dakota Valley Conference squads.

“I was really proud of the way our guys played,” said ORR coach Logan DeRungs. “This was Trygstad’s first game back from breaking his wrist. He was averaging 18 points a game when he got hurt and scored 11 points in six minutes before he broke his wrist a couple weeks ago. It was just a small hairline fracture, but for him to come back and play like he did … and also, his teammates getting him the ball helped a lot.”

Trygstad was mauled attempting to track down an offensive rebound as the clock neared zero. He went to the line and converted the front end of the one-and-one.

“I knew he was going to make it; I knew he was going to make it,” added DeRungs. “He’s a tough kid; he’s a kid you want at the line, for sure.”

The junior, who was voted game MVP, finished with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. He grabbed eight rebounds.

The teams were tied at 10-10 after a period. ORR was up 23-20 at halftime and led by as many as eight points – 33-25 at 2:12 – in the third, only to see Estelline/Hendricks rally to pull even at 33-33 heading to the fourth.

The Redhawks’ Riley Benning opened the scoring in the final period with a bucket. The Raiders’ Will Matson hit a foul shot with 5:03 to go and Riley Spilde did the same with 3:32 left.

Zach Loomis canned a trey for Estelline/Hendricks with 3:19 showing on the clock, leaving the score at 38-35.

Trystad took care of business for ORR after that.

The Raiders’ Casey Renaas had 14 rebounds.

For the Redhawks, Loomis and Harrison Wegner both scored nine points and Benning contributed eight.

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland (1-5) plays host to Arlington in Oldham and Estelline/Hendricks (1-4) is host to Lake Preston in Estelline on Friday.

Hawk junior Dalton Voelker – the game MVP – posted a double-double of 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting and 14 rebounds to go with three blocked shots and a trio of assists as the Hawks beat the Elks in a game featuring DVC teams.

“The boys played pretty well,” said CE coach Scott Hemmer. “You know, we’ve kind of been in this schedule lately where we have the whole week off and then we play a game on the weekend, so it’s been a brutal month as far as practice goes but the kids have been doing pretty well.

“Like I just told them (in the locker room), if we add all the varsity starts with our five starters, I think we just went over 40 for their careers. We start four juniors, one senior but we’re green – we’re really green – and it shows at times but every game you can see that we’re getting a little stronger, a little better.

“We missed too many bunnies, again getting too nervous; we missed too many free throws. But (ELB) is a good team; they have a lot of athletes. We knew it was going to be hard for us to guard them, but we have some good players too, and the kids are starting to figure that out.

“As long as we keep working hard, we should be good.”

Colman-Egan was up 17-10 after a quarter and 26-25 at halftime. The Hawks took a 39-33 advantage into the fourth. Their lead peaked at 10 points – 48-38 – with 1:54 remaining.

The home team on the scoreboard shot 51.4 percent (18-of-35) from the field and was 14-of-25 at the charity stripe. Colman-Egan’s starters combined to play more than 152 of the 160 available minutes.

Alec Landis added 10 points, going 5-of-6 from the field.

ELB’s Grant DeRuyer finished with 22 points, eight boards and four steals.

Colman-Egan (4-1) takes on Bridgewater-Emery in Emery and Elkton-Lake Benton (2-2) welcomes Alcester-Hudson on Saturday.

• Flandreau 43, Hamlin 40

The Fliers scored four consecutive points late to pull out the victory.

Tash Lunday’s bucket down low with 1:25 to go put Flandreau on top for good at 39-37. Connor LeBrun buried a pair of foul shots with 22 seconds left.

Mitchell Noem knocked down a 3-pointer on the other end to pull the Chargers within 41-40 with 11 seconds showing on the clock.

Lunday went 2-for-2 at the line soon thereafter and Hamlin came up empty on the other end.

“Not much offense but we’ve been kind of preaching to our players – we have kind of a tough stretch here – that we need to take care of the ball,” said Flandreau coach Brendan Sheppard. “We missed quite a few 3s, we missed quite a few layups but we didn’t turn it over a lot so we were able to have more possessions and eventually get a few shots to fall.”

Flandreau shot 34 percent (17-of-50) from the field, including 2-of-14 from long range, but committed just nine turnovers.

The Fliers trailed 10-6 after a quarter but were up 21-17 at halftime and 32-27 through three. The score was twice tied in the fourth, including at 37-37 with 1:40 remaining following a pair of charity tosses by Hamlin’s Booker Noem.

Lunday, a freshman, had a big game and was voted MVP after tallying a double-double of 21 points and 16 rebounds. He went 9-of-13 from the field.

“He did a nice job on the boards; he’s scoring some for us but what he does best is his help-side defense,” noted Sheppard. “He’s really a big strong kid, so he can get there and go straight up and people can’t go around him. He’s a strong, strong young man; so yeah, he did a nice job tonight.”

LeBrun scored 14 points and Nate Kneebone eight to go with eight boards as the Flier trio combined for all 43 points.

Hamlin’s Connor Bawdon had 18 points.

Flandreau (2-3) opens the Big East Conference Tournament taking on the Blue Dragons in the first round Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Garretson. Hamlin (2-3) is host to Groton Area on Friday.

Notes: South Dakota governor-elect Kristi Noem was in the house for the game, which was a showdown of Lake Central Conference foes.

• Dell Rapids 72, Sioux Valley 60

The Quarriers handled the Cossacks’ full-court pressure in the second half and Sioux Valley had a chilly shooting night from long range as Dell Rapids snapped a three-game losing streak in the Classic.

“We knew going in Sioux Valley is going to get up and down the floor and play hard and get out and run in transition, and we like to do that too,” said Dell Rapids coach Jason Fersdahl. “So our challenge, our keys coming in were getting back in transition defense every possession, trying to really eliminate those easy baskets because they’re quick and they get up and down the floor. They all shoot the 3 – we have to get out and contest and we did that pretty well most of the night. And then we have to fight for long rebounds. And handling their defensive pressure was our big key coming in – we had some turnovers in the first half; we cleaned that up in the second half. I thought we did a pretty good job of attacking the rim and not settling for shots.”

The Cossacks ended up 6-for-42 on 3-pointers. They shot 29.7 percent (22-of-74) overall.

Sioux Valley led 16-13 after a quarter and 34-32 at the break. Nine of Dell Rapids’ 14 turnovers came before halftime.

“Dell Rapids came out ready and prepared and did a nice job,” said Sioux Valley coach Bill Vincent. “They got a lot of runouts against us. I thought in the first half our pressure caused them some difficulties but we didn’t take advantage of it and they hung around only down two.

“I thought in the second half they did a nice job of disrupting our offensive flow and really focused in on (point guard Max) Nielson and then we just had a lot of shots just not go in off of that.

“We shot an awfully low 3-point percentage (14.3 percent) and a lot of them were catch and shoot – H-O-R-S-E shots kind of – that we’re typically going to make. But we were rattled and out of flow, I thought, offensively.”

With the Cossacks struggling from the field, the Quarriers fared quite well, shooting 53.6 percent (30-of-56) for the game. They were 27-of-42 (64.3 percent) inside the arc, with a majority of those buckets coming from close range after breaking the press.

“We talked about really attacking the pressure and going to the rim the last couple weeks in practice,” added Fersdahl. “We have some big kids, too, that are athletic and can handle it pretty well. At times early in the season we kind of settled for shots, but tonight we attacked the rim and we did it over and over.”

Dell Rapids held an 18-7 scoring advantage in the third quarter to move ahead 50-41. Sioux Valley went 3-of-19 from the floor in the period.

The Cossacks pulled within 52-46 with 7:28 remaining in the game after Schuster scored on a drive and hit a 3-pointer, but that would be as close as they would get.

Dell Rapids junior Drew Van Regenmorter was MVP after posting a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. He was 7-of-11 from the field and added five assists.

Logan Ellingson scored a team-high 22 points.

Logan Heim pulled down a classic-record 19 rebounds and scored 11 points. The 6-foot-9, 285-pound post has signed to play basketball at Dakota Wesleyan.

Connor Rentz also scored 11 points and Colin Rentz added nine.

Sioux Valley’s Max Nielson dropped in a game-high 26 points before fouling out late. Schuster contributed 10 markers and Noah Puetz corralled 10 boards.

Sioux Valley (4-2) takes on Chester Area in the first round of the BEC tourney on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Beresford. Dell Rapids (2-2) plays host to Chamberlain on Friday.

Notes: The Cossacks and Quarriers were matched up in the Entringer Classic for the sixth year in a row, with Sioux Valley holding a 4-2 advantage in such games including wins the previous three years. … The Cossacks dropped to 18-6 in the Entringer Classic. They did not participate in 1996.
