Arrows defeat Bobcats, 59-44

Sean Welsh/Register: Brookings’ Johanna Miller (50) puts up a shot between a trio of Watertown defenders during the first half of the Bobcats’ 59-44 Eastern South Dakota Conference loss to the Arrows on Friday evening at Bob Jostad Gymnasium. The senior scored a team-best 20 points.

BROOKINGS – Another slow start doomed the Bobcats, as the home squad dropped a 59-44 Eastern South Dakota Conference game to Watertown on Friday evening at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

The Arrows (1-13) scored the game’s first 19 points en route to picking up their inaugural victory of the season.

Watertown led 23-4 after a quarter, making 10 of its 17 shot attempts in the opening 8 minutes.

Megan Fannin finished with 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting to go with seven rebounds and five assists.

Brookings never got closer than 12 points the remainder of the game. It was 36-20 at halftime and 51-31 through three. The Arrows’ lead peaked at 25 points in the third.

“This has come up a couple times – we have to do a better job starting basketball games,” said BHS coach Mitch McLagan. “We’ve been spotting teams … we spotted a team 19 points early and then we win the rest of the game. We outscore them in the second (quarter), we outscore them in the fourth. We win the rest of the game, it’s just that start. We have to get better. Between coaches, we have to figure something out how to get a quicker start.

“Fannin is a really nice player. I thought we had a couple defenders do a really nice job on her but our help defense wasn’t very good on the back side of it.

“We competed. We competed; we played all right in the second half. We just have to get off to a better start.”

Johanna Miller scored 22 points and grabbed six boards for the Bobcats.

Ainsley Shelsta posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Brookings (1-14) plays at undefeated O’Gorman on Saturday at 3 p.m.
