Arrows rally for 48-43 ESD win

BROOKINGS – BHS head coach Lynn Frederick mentioned that plays at the end of the game are magnified – which could mean both good plays and bad plays.

Unfortunately for the Bobcats, it was Watertown that made several good plays down the stretch to rally for a 48-43 Eastern South Dakota Conference win on Thursday night at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

Brookings led 25-18 at halftime, but the Arrows outscored the ‘Cats 14-7 in the third quarter to send the game into the final frame tied at 32.

Watertown scored the first four points of the fourth quarter – a driving basket by Megan Fannin, followed by a pair of Anni Cummings’ free throws – for a 36-32 lead.

Michaela Jewett answered with a left-handed hook in the paint and then, Megan Gilk converted 1-of-2 free throws to make it 36-33.

Fannin scored on another driving layup, and added a free throw 40 seconds later to push the Arrows’ lead to 39-35, but Grace Eggebrecht’s old-fashioned three-point play on the ‘Cats’ next possession pulled them back within one at 39-38.

Jackie Tetzlaff stepped to the line and knocked down both free throws for a 41-38 Watertown edge before Ava Burns drained a 3 to tie the game at 41-41 with 2:57 to play.

Brookings then took advantage of an Arrow turnover when Peyton Evans scored in the lane off an assist from Jewett to give the Bobcats a 43-41 lead with 2:26 on the clock.

A blocked shot by Jewett gave the ‘Cats a chance to build on their lead, but a turnover gave the ball back to Watertown and Taylor Terronez scored on an eight-foot jumper to tie the game at 43-43 with just over a minute left.

The Bobcats didn’t get a shot on their next possession as they turned it over, and then, Terronez buried a 3 from the top of the key to give Watertown a 46-43 advantage.

Brookings missed a 3-point attempt on its end, and Terronez grabbed the rebound; was fouled; and drained both free throws to make it 48-43 with 20 seconds on the clock.

The Bobcats missed their first 3-point try; pulled down the offensive rebound, but missed their second 3-point attempt as time expired.

“Our lead should have been bigger at halftime – we didn’t take advantage of some things; we didn’t finish quarters very well with certain possessions, but those are areas we have to get better at,” said Frederick. “You have to give them credit – they played well defensively. I think the third quarter was the big difference – we got stuck on 27 (points) – a little inefficient offensively and they were taking the ball to the basket and getting some calls – that’s why you do that.

“I thought both teams played well defensively; we were just inconsistent on the offensive end – missed some opportunities – we just need to be better. When teams are really getting after us, our offense needs to be better with reads and that kind of thing.

“Mistakes at the end are always magnified; there’s lots of little things throughout the game that we could have done a better job – we just need to get better in some little areas and I think we’ll be alright.”

Jewett scored a game-high 17 points, to go along with seven rebounds, an assist and a block as Brookings dropped to 6-5 and 6-4 in the ESD. Burns added 10 points and five boards while Eggebrecht finished with seven points, six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Megan Gilk pulled down a game-high nine boards, which included seven on the offensive end as the Bobcats won the battle of the boards, 41-28.

Terronez dropped 16 points and came up with four steals to lead Watertown, which improved to 3-9 and 3-6 in conference play. Cummings chipped in with 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists while Fannin finished with 10 markers and a pair of takeaways.

Brookings plays host to Sioux Falls Lincoln on Tuesday.
