BROOKINGS – The Arrows left no doubt as to who is the top team in 2019 as Watertown knocked off defending champion Mitchell by nearly three points – 147.225-144.500 – in Friday’s team competition of the SDHSAA Class AA State Gymnastics Meet at the Swiftel Center.

The host Bobcats placed third with 138.375 points – matching last year’s podium spot – as Pierre finished fourth (137.250), followed by Sioux Falls O’Gorman (134.650); Yankton (134.250); Roosevelt (133.225); Lincoln (132.325); and Aberdeen Central (131.200).

“It was not a surprise at all,” BHS head coach Rachelle Engbrecht said of Friday’s results. “After the conference qualifier, we knew Sioux Falls was getting closer, but Pierre and us had been neck and neck, back-and-forth the whole time, and Mitchell and Watertown had been fighting back-and-forth (all season), so it didn’t surprise me at all.

“They really all stepped up – they were just fighting for the team – probably even more nervous because they wanted to do so well for their group,” Engbrecht said of her team’s performance. “They’re such a tight-knit family; they just really pull for each other.”

The Arrows had the top scores in three of the four events – vault (36.550), uneven bars (36.625) and floor (37.875) – while the Kernels’ 36.525 was tops on the beam.

Brookings was third on both the bars (33.700) and floor exercise (35.450), to go along with fourth-place finishes on both the vault (35.100) and beam (34.125).

The Golden Eagles were third on the vault (35.600) while the Lady Govs’ 35.525 points put them third on the beam.
