Ashley Vandermeer, Dolphins off to strong start in Class B

RAPID CITY – Ashley Vandermeer and the rest of the Deubrook Area Dolphins picked up right where they left off as the defending champions grabbed the lead on the team leaderboard at the Class B State Girls’ Track and Field Meet on Friday at O’Harra Stadium.

Vandermeer, a junior, picked up a pair of victories.

She won the triple jump title for the third year in a row, posting a mark of 36 feet, 1 1/4 inches. She was 15 1/2 inches ahead of second place.

Vandermeer also prevailed in the long jump at 17-1 3/4 – good for a 7 1/4-inch win. She placed fourth in the event a year ago.

Vandermeer additionally was the top qualifier in the 200-meter run with a time of 26.28 seconds in the preliminaries.

Deubrook won the 4x800-meter relay for the third consecutive year as junior Shaylee DeBeer, freshman Andrea Vandermeer, senior Cortney Bauman and junior Josie Olsen clocked a time of 9:49.34.

DeBeer, Olsen and Bauman have been a part of all three winning teams, while Vandermeer was on the squad for a second time.

DeBeer was runner-up in the 800 meters with a 2:24.8 clocking and added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump at 34-1 3/4.

Olsen finished second in the 3,200 in 12:20.08. Andrea Vandermeer (12:38.87) took sixth.

The Dolphins have 54 team points.

Ipswich (35.5), Wall (24), Newell (22) and Estelline/ Hendricks (21.5) round out the top five. Colman-Egan (9) sits in 11th.

The Redhawks’ Greta Johnson won the pole vault, clearing 11 feet. Teammate Sophie Johnson was runner-up at 10-9 and Christine Nefzger (9-6) tied for sixth. Kylie Beare took eighth in the long jump with a mark of 15-10.

The Hawks’ Olivia Baumberger placed fourth in the long jump at 16-3. Reese Luze nished the 800 in 2:26.3 to place fifth.

The meet concludes today at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City.
