Asmus honored for volunteerism

BROOKINGS – The Helpline Center recently announced that Patti Asmus has been named the June 2022 Volunteer of the Month, an area-wide award program sponsored by the Helpline Center and First Bank & Trust.

Over the last few months, Asmus has consistently volunteered her time to gather the supplies needed and then to complete the Helpline Center’s do-it-yourself volunteer projects. With the help of her grandchildren, she has worked hard to deliver these projects for various nonprofits to use in Brookings.

Asmus has helped to instill a spirit of volunteerism in her grandchildren by guiding them through the DIY projects and having them get involved.

Together, they purchased dozens of socks for the sock drive that Helpline Center and The Salvation Army of Brookings County held.

They have completed dozens of elderly care kits for United Living Community that contained colored pictures from a local elementary school, handmade flowers from Asmus, and many other items that are included in the care kit suggested items.

Asmus has also completed other projects such as Helpline Center’s laundry kit.

A staff member at The Salvation Army of Brookings County said, “I had someone in tears over that laundry basket. We were helping her with a service and she is in a tough spot and was in need of dryer sheets and soap. The laundry basket had come in about 30 minutes ago and I had put it in the back thinking I was going to bring it to the laundry ministry. She said ‘It must have been a God thing.’ I said ‘Those things happen all the time here.’”

According to a Helpline Center release, “Patti truly embodies what it means to be a volunteer. Her time and dedication that she has so generously poured into the Brookings community does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Patti serves others with her whole heart and gives 100 percent of herself in the process. Everyone who knows Patti sees and feels her remarkable energy and giving spirit.”
