BROOKINGS – A Brookings man was arrested for allegedly hitting and attempting to strangle a woman on Monday, according to Lt. Derrick Powers of the Brookings Police.

The police received a call at 1:45 a.m. Monday from a third person who was reporting they could hear a man and woman arguing in the 1000 block of Western Avenue, Powers said.

The man, 29, and woman, 39, were known to each other and are both Brookings residents, he added.

The woman said they had been at a downtown establishment, “during which time an argument ensued between the two, which led to the male hitting her with a fist and also with a pool stick,” Powers said.

The woman left and both she and the man went to the residence. “The argument continued, during which time she reported that the male had struck her again several times, had threatened her and had also attempted to strangle her by putting his hands around her throat,” Powers said.

The man was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and transported to the Brookings County Detention Center.

The Brookings Ambulance responded to check on the woman, Powers said.

Caddy stolen

A Cadillac was stolen on Saturday, and Brookings Police are looking for it.

“The vehicle was left unlocked with the keys in the ignition,” Powers said.

The blue 2008 Cadillac DTS was taken from the area of Second Street and 13th Avenue and was reported missing at 7:40 a.m. Saturday, Powers said.

“It had been left parked there since 8 p.m. the previous evening,” he said.

Racial slur on garage

Brookings Police are looking for the person who intentionally damaged a residence over the weekend, Powers said.

Shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday, a report came in about graffiti in the 400 block of Telluride Lane, he said.

“Someone had written a racial slur on a garage door,” Powers said. “It’s under investigation.”
