Astoria's Trevor Hinderaker wins Prairie Striders Indoor 5K

Trevor Hinderaker, who has been one of the top finishers in the Prairie Striders Indoor 5K since 2017, stood on the top step of the podium in 2023.

Hinderaker, 25, of Astoria, led from start to finish in the 3.1-mile run in the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Center on Jan. 21. His time of 18:29.40 topped second-place finisher Joseph Barnes, 25, of Sioux Falls, by 30 seconds (19:09.10). Finishing third and leading the women’s division was Corinne Braun, 17, of Canton, with a time of 19:31.50.

Rounding out the top five were Tevis Helzer, 33, of Volga, 19:35.60, third place in men’s open, and Owen McElroy, 40, of Watertown, 19:53.20, first place in men’s masters.

The women’s master’s winner was Emily Hesby, 44, of, Brookings, with a time of 23:43.30, which was 19th overall.

Finishing second in their divisions were Kate McElroy, 14, of Watertown, female open, 21:20.0; Kenny Maas, 40, of Mitchell, male masters, 20:23.0; and Michelle Buffalo Knuppe, 48, of Dell Rapids, female masters, 26:04.80.
