Athalyn May Halstead was born in Clear Lake, on Jan. 3, 1934, to William (Bill) H. Halstead and Mary Ellen Hewitt.  They lived on a farm and she went to rural school until third grade when they moved to Brookings. She graduated from Brookings High School in 1952.

Athy was united in marriage to John E. Jones on Jan. 24, 1953.  They lived in Huron for 12 years and Denver Colorado for 20 years as John worked for Western Airlines.

In 1985, she moved back to Brookings.  Athy’s main occupation was mother and housewife, her children were her whole life.  Later she worked as an office secretary several times, assistant manager to her brother at his café and bakery, preschool and retail.

In later years she volunteered at Central and Medary schools for Mrs. Wengler’s kindergarten class which she liked very much.

Her faith has always been very important to her and has gotten her through life.  She accepted Jesus as her Savior when in her teens.

Brookings is a peaceful, calm place to live and she liked it very much here.  She enjoyed her church, church family and friends.  Her children and granddaughters were her life and it had been very sad at times as she lost 3 of her 4 children.

She liked to read, go to lunch and take a ride in the country.

Athy is survived by her son, Tom Jones of Louisville, CO; her granddaughters, Jessica Jones of Boulder, CO and Heather Clark of Owasso, OK; her great granddaughter, Joh-Anna; her brother, Dick Halstead of Brookings, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughters, Diana Jones and Kay Cummings; her son, Jeff Jones and her brothers, Darrel, Lorn and Don Halstead.
