Aurora tops Volga 9-8 with walk-off

AURORA – The Aurora Aces came away with a walk-off 9-8 victory over the Volga Cormorants Sunday. 

Volga opened the scoring with two RBI singles in the first inning from Layne Lucas and Brady Bury.

The Aces would get one back in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to one and would tie things up 2-2 in the third inning.

Volga then regained the lead with a five-run fifth inning highlighted by RBI from Matt Laison, Austin Chase and Cole Gross. The Aces scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and Volga scored one in the top of the sixth to make the score 8-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Aurora cut into the deficit in the sixth by scoring three runs with RBIs from Justin Sweet, Zach Treiber ane Trey Tiefenthaller to make it 8-7. 

Niether team scored in the seventh and Treiber hit in the tying run in the eighth on a ground out. 

The Aces were able to shut down Volga in the top of the ninth giving Aurora a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning. They did just that when Cam May hit a grounder back to the pitcher, Chase, and he was unable to throw the runner out at the plate.

Treiber picked up the victory for the Aces. He pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Trevor Hornig started the game for Aurora. He pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up seven runs on seven hits with seven walks and four strike outs. Tyler Swanson also threw 1 2/3 innings for the Aces and gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Chase pitched all eight innings for the Comorants. He gave up nine runs on eight hits striking out 11 batters and walking seven.

Gabe Bagstad went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Aurora. May went 1-for-3  with an RBI and Tiefenfaler went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Chase and Gross both went 2-for-5 with an RBI for Volga. Lucas went 2-for-2 with RBI and Bury went 1-for5 with an RBI as well.

The Aces host Milbank tonight at 8 p.m. Volga will host Castlewood tonight at 8 p.m.
