Balanced Bobcats win at Washington

SIOUX FALLS – The Bobcats shared the ball during a 62-58 nonconference boys’ basketball win over Sioux Falls Washington on Thursday night.

Brookings assisted on 20 of its 23 field goals while shooting 47.9 percent from the field. Six players scored at least six points.

“We did a great job of sharing the basketball,” said BHS coach Travis Engebretson. “We had 20 assists – I can’t remember ever having that many.”

Jay Wilber led the way with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a 4-of-6 clip from 3-point range.

Trent Broksieck added 12 points, going 4-of-7 from the floor, and dished out six assists.

Drew Cole posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Eric Sell canned a trio of 3s and finished with 10 markers.

Trevor Woodall added eight points and Carson Gullickson chipped in with six off the bench.

The Bobcats were ahead 16-13 after a quarter and 37-35 at halftime. Tied at 44-44 late in the third, Gullickson hit a free throw and Cole had a bucket to make it 47-44 through three.

Brookings continued the push in the fourth stanza as Broksieck and Wilber sandwiched treys around a Cole basket to push the margin to 55-44.

The Bobcats led 60-49 with 2 minutes remaining before holding on down the stretch. They missed the front end of a pair of one-and-one opportunities.

The Warriors’ Carter Shields finished with 19 points and five rebounds. Ganin Thompson added 10 markers.

Washington dropped to 3-6.

Brookings (3-6) is host to Yankton on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
