Balanced Rangers double up Lakers in state tourney opener

FT. PIERRE – Six different Rangers lit the lamp and Brookings scored four unanswered goals in the second period during a 6-3 win over Watertown to open the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association Boys’ State Tournament on Friday morning at the Expo Center.

The teams exchanged goals in the opening period.

Dominic Dobesh scored on an assist from Cody Niklason 3:05 into the game for the Rangers. The Lakers’ Jacob Gerber found the back of the net less than 3 minutes later, as Connor Bramer and Greg Petereit were credited with assists.

Brookings took control in the second.

Kobe Ischen scored a goal 2 minutes into the period. Austin Lesnar assisted.

Brandin Heesch added a goal 25 seconds later, assisted by Matthew Chapin. Trevor Kuechenmeister netted an unassisted goal with 11:06 to go in the period.

Niklason’s power-play tally pushed the margin to 5-1 with 3:51 showing on the clock. Chapin was credited with the assist.

Watertown cut the deficit in half in the third on goals by Bramer (power play) and Garrett Barse – the latter of which came with 9:47 remaining in the game. Petereit assisted on the first goal and Dawsyn Wirkus on the second.

Carter Shoup closed out the scoring with 4:55 left. Ischen and Lesnar assisted.

Niklason and Ischen both finished with a goal and an assist, while Chapin and Lesnar tallied two helpers apiece.

Tristian Hokenson made 18 saves to earn the victory in goal.

For the Lakers, Bramer had one goal and one assist. Petereit was credited with a pair of assists.

Jared Fedt made 24 stops between the pipes.

Third-seeded Brookings (14-3-2-0) faces second-seeded Rushmore (17-1-1-0) in the semifinals tonight at 7:05. The Thunder beat Mitchell 8-0 Friday.

The Rangers went 0-1-1-0 against the Thunder in the regular season, tying 2-2 on Dec. 30 and falling 4-2 on Dec. 31 in Rapid City.

Ryan Nolan recorded a natural hat trick while totaling four goals and an assist, and John Young made 12 saves to earn the shutout in goal as the Thunder rolled past the Marlins.

Brian Petereit added a goal and three assists.

Tanner Good and Petereit scored early to get Rushmore going.

Nolan lit the lamp with 4:21 remaining in the first, with 12:58 to go in the second and with 11:54 left in the second for the natural hat trick.

Camden Nayman and Derrick Brown added second-period goals to make it 7-0, and Nolan capped his big day with a goal early in the third.

Good tallied an assist to go with his goal, while Seth Dikoff had two helpers.

Mitchell goalie Zachary Mohr stopped 30 shots.

• Huron 2, Oahe 1

Despite holding a 40-17 advantage in shots, the Capitals could only get one past Huron goalie Jacob Wehde as the fifth-seeded All Stars upset No. 4 Oahe to advance to a championship semifinal against top-seeded Sioux Falls.

Walker Schiltz gave Huron (11-8) the early lead less than 4 minutes into the game as the All Stars led 1-0 after a period.

Xavier Erickson’s goal 3 minutes into the second period pushed the All Stars’ lead to 2-0 before Spencer Wedin tallied a short-handed goal with 9 1/2 minutes left in the second for the Capitals’ only score as neither team lit the lamp in the third.

Tristan Fuerst nished with 15 saves for Oahe (11-8), who will face Sioux Center (4-14-0-1) in the consolation semifinals.

• Sioux Falls 7, Sioux Center 0

The Flyers scored three goals in the first period and then added two more in both the second and third in the first-round shutout of the Storm.

Nate Mohr opened the scoring with an unassisted goal before Ethan Ramsey scored off assists from Cole Teigen and Trey Ponto with a minute left in the first for a 2-0 edge.

Braden Malwitz lit the lamp with a second remaining as Nathan Fanning and Mohr picked up the assists for a 3-0 Sioux Falls lead after one.

Ramsey notched his second goal of the game with less than 7 minutes to play in the second as Teigen and Collin Geres earned assists; and then, Mohr pushed the Flyer lead to 5-0 off a Fanning helper heading into the second intermission.

In the third period, Ryan Dinsmore and Keegan Anderson found the back of the net with unassisted goals for the final margin.

The Flyers (17-1-1) outshot Sioux Center, 44-10, as Tristan Scandin collected 10 saves for the shutout win in goal.

Blake Cannegieter stopped 37 Sioux Falls shot in the loss.
