Band competition heats up

BROOKINGS – The Brookings High School Marching Band has a couple of band exhibitions to its credit already this year.

On Aug. 25, the band performed its preview performance for family and supporters at the track field at the high school. Following their performance, members climbed on the buses and headed to Sioux Falls to attend a band clinic and perform in the evening as the featured exhibition performance.

The band received first place in the Sept. 1 daily parade at the Minnesota State Fair. The band was in competition with bands from Altoona, Wisconsin, and Blaine, Minnesota.

The first home football game was on Sept. 6. The band took the field at halftime and treated the fans to the first viewing of its competition routine.

The band exhibition/competition season starts in earnest in mid-September. There are additional dates when supporters can cheer on the band yet this month.

On Saturday, the band will perform downtown. At 10:30 a.m. members will perform at United Living Community and Pioneer Park, and at 11 a.m. they will march to the Brookings Farmers Market Fall Festival.

BHS Homecoming Week is next week, and Sept. 21 is the varsity football game. The band put on a pregame show at 6:45 p.m. and perform at halftime.

On Saturday, Sept. 22, is the Pursuit of Excellence field show and competition in Marshall, Minnesota. This will be held on the campus of Southwest State University, Maverick Stadium.

September competitions end on Saturday, Sept. 30, with the Tri-state, Luverne and Big Sioux Review, Brandon Field Competition. The parade at Luverne, Minnesota, is at 9:30 a.m. TriState is from 12:30-3:30 p.m., and the Brandon Sioux Review is at 7 p.m.

The competition season is just getting started. October is even more impressive.
