Bandits beat Fargo Trappers for first victory

SIOUX FALLS – The Bandits picked up their first win of the season Sunday at The Dakota Classic, beating the Fargo Trappers Post 400 10-0 in six innings in a consolation game at Harmodon.

Post 74 fell 6-5 to Viroqua, Wis., on Saturday to finish with an 0-3 mark in pool play.

Brookings (1-7) returns to action at the St. Cloud Tournament, which is Friday through Sunday.

Consolation game

 Brookings 10, Fargo Trappers Post 400 0 (6 inn.)

Jameson Meyer tossed a two-hit shutout and Jacob Schoon hit a two-run homer as the Bandits cruised to the victory.

Meyer struck out 11 batters and walked one. He threw 82 pitches in six innings.

Tyler Kreutner, who finished 3-for-4, led off the game with a double.

Ryan McMacken was hit by a pitch with two outs, before Rhett Zelinski, who ended up 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, came through with a run-scoring single to get Brookings on the board.

Kreutner opened the third with a single. Schoon was hit by a pitch with one away and Zelinski singled with two outs.

Tanner Shepardson tallied an RBI single that made it 2-0. Justin Devine followed with an RBI hit of his own.

Christian Mediger hit a groundball and reached on an error, as Zelinski sprinted home  on the play to push the margin to 4-0.

Brady Ammann reached on an error with one out in the fourth.

Schoon came up next and lined a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field. The home run put the Bandits ahead 6-0.

Post 74 wrapped up the scoring with a four-run sixth inning.

Preston Helmbolt walked and Kreutner singled to get it going. Ammann followed with an RBI single to make it 7-0. Schoon was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Zelinski reached on catcher’s interference, which allowed Kreutner to score.

Brock Luze recorded a two-run single that provided for the final margin of 10-0.

Kreutner and Schoon both scored three times and Ammann touched home twice.

Meyer retired the first 11 batters he faced, including eight by strikeout. He didn’t allow a runner to get to third.

Kain Carlson singled with two outs in the fourth for Fargo’s first baserunner and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Andy Mach had a one-out single in the fifth, but never advanced.

In the sixth, Andrew Erickson drew a one-out base on balls. He got to second on a two-out error, which allowed Carlson to reach, but a fielder’s choice ended the game soon thereafter.

Noah Hankel took the loss after giving up seven runs – four earned – on seven hits with six strikeouts and a walk in five-plus innings.

Ryan Zemla’s walkoff single in the ninth lifted the 138ers over the Bandits.

Mason Skrede, who finished 2-for-4, led off the bottom of the ninth with a double. Zemla came up next and hit a hard ground ball to right field to drive in the winning run.

Viroqua logged the game’s first run as Andrew Wedwick, who went 2-for-5, singled with one out in the opening inning, took second on a groundout, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on Dalton Burckhardt’s hit.

Brookings put up a pair of runs in the top of the third.

Preston Helmbolt singled and Justin Devine then hit into a fielder’s choice. Tyler Kreutner was hit by a pitch and Brady Ammann hit into another fielder’s choice, with Devine advancing to third on the play.

Devine scored soon thereafter and Ammann moved to second. Jacob Schoon walked and Ryan McMacken was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ammann scampered home on a wild pitch to put Post 74 on top by a 2-1 margin.

Viroqua’s Clayton Slack, who was 2-for-3 with a trio of runs, and Ryan Hannah drew consecutive one-out walks in the fourth. Wedwick flew out to right, which allowed Slack to advance to third. Slack scored on a wild pitch.

Hunter Vikemyr, who ended up 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, followed with a run-scoring single to put the 138ers on top 3-2.

Viroqua extended the lead to 4-2 in the sixth after Slack reached on an error and advanced to second on the play, moved to third on Hannah’s sacrifice bunt and then scored on Vikemyr’s two-out single.

The Bandits rallied in the seventh.

With one out, Devine and Kreutner (bunt) both singled. Devine scored from second on a throwing error and Kreutner advanced to third.

Ammann came through with a run-scoring hit to knot the score at 4-all.

Brookings struck first in the extra frames with a run in the top of the eighth.

Rhett Zelinski led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on Parker Rykhus’ groundout. Brock Luze walked. Both runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch, as Zelinski scored on an error on the play to put Post 74 ahead 5-4.

The 138ers answered in the bottom of the inning on consecutive one-out singles by Slack, Hannah and Wedwick (RBI).

Slack picked up the win after allowing two runs – none earned – on three hits and three walks with one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings. Skrede, the starter, gave up three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks in 6 1/3 innings.

Luze took the loss, surrendering three runs – one earned – on six hits with a strikeout in three-plus innings of action. Shepardson, the starter, allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts in five frames.

Rykhus doubled as seven different Bandits collected a hit. Schoon and Shepardson both added a single.
