Bandits blow out Huron in doubleheader

HURON – The Brookings Bandits swept a doubleheader against Huron Tuesday night. The Bandits used good offense and good pitching to come away with two blow out wins.

Game 1

 Brookings 11, Huron 2

The Bandits scored 10 runs in the final four innings as they ran away with the first game.

Neither team scored in the first two innings and Brookings struck first in the top of the third. With one out, Daniel Messerli hit a single and Rhett Zelinsky was hit by a pitch. Jaxon Honkomp then followed with a single that scored Messerli to put Brookings up 1-0. Huron did score in the bottom of the third.

Brookings struck for three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Henry Hammrich hit an RBI triple. Messerli and Zelinsky hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 4-0. Huron was able to score one run in the bottom of the fourth. Brookings scored two runs in the top of the fifth on a Krogman single to make it 6-1. Huron got one run back in the bottom of the inning. 

The Bandits added to their lead in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Honkomp and Jake Ammann scored on an error. Max Kjlelden then scored on an error as well to make it 9-2. Brookings held Huron scoreless in the bottom of the sixth. 

Brookings scored two more runs in the top of the seventh. Zelinsky led off the inning with a triple and he scored on a Joey McMacken ground out. Parker Rykhus walked and then scored on an Kjelden single to make it 11-2. Huron led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, but then went down one-two-three to end the game.

Zelinsky went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Messerli went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Krogman went 1-for-3 with two RBI’s. Kjelden and Hammrich each went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Caden Wright picked up the win for the Bandits after pitching the first five innings and gave up two runs, one earned. He gave up two hits, struck out 10 batters and walked six.

Game 2

 Brookings 12, Huron 0 (5 inn.)

The Bandits used a nine-run second inning to come away with a victory in game two. Brookings didn’t give up a hit in the five inning game.

Neither team scored in the first inning and then Brookings broke out in the top of the second. The Bandits scored nine runs in the top of the second and the inning was highlighted by an RBI double by Ammann. Kjelden and Honkomp each hit RBI singles as well. Huron walked five Brookings batters in the inning.

Huron went down one-two-three in the bottom of the second and the Bandits struck for two more runs in the top of the third. Brookings’ first three batters of the inning reached base. Mason Bebensee and Hammrich then each scored on an error to make it 11-0. Huron went down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning. 

Neither team scored in the fourth inning and Brookings added one run in the top of the fifth. With two outs, McMacken singled. He later scored on a Honkomp single. Huron went down one-two-three in the bottom of the fifth and the game ended because of the 10-run rule.

Honkomp went 3-for-4 with two RBI’s. Ammann went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Hammrich went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Krogman was awarded the win for the Bandits. He pitched four innings and gave up no runs and no hits. He struck out five batters and walked three. 

The Bandits will play a doubleheader against Sioux Valley tonight in Volga.
