Bandits blow out Sioux Valley, 18-1 in Volga

VOLGA – The Brookings Bandits made quick work of the Sioux Valley legion team as they beat them 18-1 in five innings Wednesday night.

The Bandits put up five runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, Daniel Messerli walked and Rhett Zelinsky singled. They both scored on wild pitches. Joey McMacken hit a two-run single to make it 5-0. Sioux Valley hit a double in the bottom of the inning, but was unable to score.

Brookings scored four runs in the top of the second. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single from Jake Ammann.

Sioux Valley had runners on first and second with two outs, but grounded out to second base. Brookings then put up two runs in the top of the third.

Jamison Honkomp was hit by a pitch and Cole Mahlum walked to start the inning. Parker Rykhus then hit a double that scored Honkomp. Mahlum scored on a sacrifice fly from Ammann. Sioux Valley led off the bottom of the third with a single, but then went down one-two-three.

The Bandits scored four more runs in the top of the fourth. Zelinsky hit an RBI single and Ammann hit a two-run single to make it 15-1. Sioux Valley went down one-two-three in the bottom of the fourth.

Brookings would put up three more runs in the top of the fifth. Zelinsky hit a sacrifice fly. Mahlum and Rykhus then each hit RBI singles to make it 18-0. 

Sioux Valley was finally able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. They needed to score eight runs to keep the game going, but were only able to score one, so the game ended because of the 10-run rule.

Ammann went 2-for-4 with five RBI’s. Rykhus went 2-for-3 with three RBI’s and Zelinsky went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Mahlum went 3-for-3 with an RBI and McMacken went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Mason Bebensee started the game for the Bandits. He picked up the win after pitching four scoreless innings. He gave up five hits and struck out two batters. Honkomp pitched the final inning and gave up one earned run on two hits. He struck out two batters and walked one.

Next up, the Bandits will play a doubleheader on July 15 in Madison.
