Bandits dominate Game 2, split with Smittys

BROOKINGS – The Bandits bounced back from a 6-4 setback with a dominant 20-0, three-inning victory during a doubleheader versus Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings (2-2) hosts Harrisburg in another twinbill Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Game 1

 Aberdeen 6, Brookings 4

The Bandits rallied to knot the score at 4-all; however, the Smittys scored twice in the top of the seventh to pull out the victory.

Aiden McCafferty doubled to get the final frame going. Nick Clemens walked.

Josh Steinwandt followed with a run-scoring two-bagger, making it 5-4.

Connor Kannas drew a one-out walk and Clemens later scored an insurance run.

Clemens (two RBIs), Steinwandt (RBI), Tyler Hoffman and Brock Martin each finished with a pair of hits.

Martin threw two innings, allowing one run on one hit with four strikeouts and a pair of walks, to earn the victory on the mound in relief.

Aberdeen struck first with a run in the opening inning.

In the second, Brookings’ Jake Ammann reached on an error with one away and Ashton Witte drew a two-out walk.

Kyle Bauer’s RBI single made it 1-1.

The Smittys scored once in the third and twice in the fifth to grab a 4-1 advantage.

The Bandits rallied after that.

Lincoln Hardin drew a base on balls to open the bottom of the fifth.

Henry Hammrich, who finished 3-for-4, singled.

Cole Mahlum came through with an RBI hit to the left side.

Hammrich was thrown out at home on a double steal attempt. Mahlum took third on the play.

After Jackson Krogman walked, Jamison Honkomp drove in Mahlum with a groundout to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Payton Theodosopoulos started a two-out rally in the sixth with a walk and then stole second. Hammrich stepped up with a run-scoring single to make it 4-4.

Starter Caden Wright allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks over four innings. Daniel Messerli took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts in three innings.

Game 2

 Brookings 20, Aberdeen 0 (3 inn.)

The Bandits racked up 12 hits and nine free passes (seven walks) in just two innings. They put up a 12-spot in the opening frame.

Henry Hammrich finished 2-for-2 with a walk, four RBIs and three runs scored. He hit a three-run homer.

Jake Ammann recorded a three-run homer, doubled, walked and scored three times.

Jamison Honkomp ended up 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs.

Sam Hardin doubled and drove in three runs.

Payton Theodosopoulos stroked a two-run two-bagger.

Kyle Bauer singled, walked twice and drove in a pair.

Trey Svennes and Max Kjelden both singled and logged an RBI. Josh Devine also drove in a run.

Lincoln Hardin tossed a two-hit shutout. He struck out three batters and walked two.

Smittys starter Austin Wagemann allowed eight runs – seven earned – on three hits and three walks without recording an out. Tyler Hoffman surrendered 12 runs – seven earned – on nine hits and four walks with one K in 1 2/3.
