Bandits go 1-1 over weekend at St. Cloud Tournament

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bandits split a pair of games versus Minnesota teams on Saturday, beating Waite Park 12-5 and then falling to Wayzata by a 7-1 margin, to finish with a 1-3 record in the St. Cloud Tournament.

Brookings (10-11) is host to Renner in a doubleheader Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Bob Shelden Field.

The Bandits put up four runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to pull away.

Post 74 opened the scoring with a six-run second.

Rhett Zelinsky reached on an error and Justin Devine was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on Trevor Berreth’s sacrifice, before Tanner Shepardson walked to load the bases.

Zelinsky scampered home on a wild pitch.

Jackson Krogman, Cayden Jacobsma and Tyler Kreutner delivered RBI singles. Jacob Schoon’s two-run hit with two away made it 6-0.

Waite Park countered with five runs in the third.

Thomas Otto singled and Tanner Roob, who finished 2-for-3, walked. Lucas Theisan reached on an error to load the bases.

Nick Gill came through with a two-run single. After Alex Dalbec walked, Sam Luepke plated Theisan with a sacrifice fly. Charlie Atkinson’s two-run hit cut the deficit to 6-5.

In the sixth, Jacobsma and Kreutner walked and then advanced on Parker Rykhus’ sacrifice. Schoon reached on an error, which allowed courtesy runner Caden Wright to score.

Zelinsky stroked a two-run triple and Berreth added an RBI single with two outs to make it 10-5.

Krogman, Jacobsma and Kreutner walked to open the seventh.

Krogman scored on a wild pitch and Rykhus was hit by a pitch to reload the bases.

Zelinsky’s one-out RBI single provided for the final margin. He finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Kreutner pitched three innings to earn the win, giving up five runs – three earned – on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Cole Mahlum tossed three scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit with five strikeouts. Jacobsma threw a scoreless seventh, working around a single and a walk.

Atkinson took the loss after surrendering six runs – two earned – on four hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks in two innings. Dalbec allowed six runs – four earned – on two hits and six walks in four-plus innings.

 Wayzata 7, Brookings 1

Jacob Hoogenakker tossed a one-hitter, giving up one run with three strikeouts and four walks, and Nathan Brennan homered to lead Wayzata.

Luke Deselich reached on an error with one out in the bottom of the first. Brayden Bengston followed with an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Minnesota squad ahead 2-0.

Anthony Esposito, who went 3-for-3, singled in the second. Brennan drove an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left field for a two-run homer, making it 4-0.

Wayzata added three runs in the third.

Deselich walked and Bengston was hit by a pitch, before Chris Jacobs reached on a fielder’s choice. Deselich scored on a wild pitch. After Esposito singled with two away, Jacobs scored on a balk. Brennan reached on an error, which allowed Esposito to score to make it 7-0.

The Bandits scored their lone run in the fourth.

Schoon walked with one out and, with two away, Rykhus was hit by a pitch and Christian Mediger drew a base on balls. Berreth’s walk forced in Schoon.

Schoon recorded a hit for Post 74.

Shepardson took the loss after allowing seven runs – five earned – on four hits and two walks with one strikeout in three innings. Rykhus tossed the final three frames, giving up two hits with one walk.
