Bandits rally past Yankton, 21-20

BROOKINGS – In a game that saw 38 hits and 10 errors, the Bandits rallied with three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 21-20 American Legion win over Yankton on Saturday at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings, 12-19 on the season and seeded fourth in Region 1A, faces fifth-seeded Huron on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Huron at the Region 1A Tournament.

If the Bandits win that game, they play top-seeded Renner at 4 p.m.

If Brookings loses, Post 74 would take on the loser of No. 2 seed Watertown and No. 3 seed Aberdeen in an elimination game at approximately 7 p.m.

The top two teams from the Region 1A American Legion Tournament advance to the Class A American Legion State Tournament, to be held July 26-30 at Fitzgerald Stadium in Rapid City.

The third-place team will play in the wild card game for the final berth in the state tournament.

• Brookings 21, Yankton 20

Despite giving up 13 runs over the final three innings – only seven of which were earned – Brandon Nelson picked up the win in relief as he allowed 13 hits and walked one.

The Bandits trailed 7-6 after seven innings before Yankton put up seven in the seventh and six in the eighth to seemingly take control of the game.

But Brookings responded with nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to get within 20-18, and then, the home team scored three in the ninth with a two-out rally.

Drew Cole and Nelson hit back-to-back singles before Tyler Kreutner came through with a pinch-hit double that plated both Cole and Nelson to tie the game.

Justin Devine walked before Jacob Devine singled to center field, scoring Kreutner with the winning run.

Nelson and Jameson Meyer each had four hits as Meyer drove in four runs with two singles and two doubles while Nelson finished with two RBIs.

Jacob Devine had three hits, including a triple, and four RBIs, while Akren Prodoehl added three singles and two runs batted in.

Chris Lerdal and Cole had two hits and two RBIs apiece as Kreutner drove in two with a double.

Cole started on the mound and gave up four runs – two earned – on three hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings. Cody Niklason allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks with a strikeout in 4 1/3 frames.
