Bandits split with Renner

BROOKINGS – The Bandits split a Legion baseball doubleheader with Renner Post 307 on Tuesday at Bob Shelden Field, winning the nightcap 4-1 after dropping the opener by a 5-3 margin.

Brookings (5-15) plays host to Pierre in another twinbill today at 4 p.m.

Game 1

• Renner 5, Brookings 3

The Royals scored all five of their runs in the top of the third inning and held off the Bandits for the victory.

Austin Rhode gave up three runs – two earned – on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six-plus innings to earn the win on the mound.

Post 307’s Isaac Struck, who finished 2-for-3, led off the second with a bunt single and Cayden Veland followed with a double.

Leadoff hitter Trevor Schaller came through with an RBI single to get Renner on the board. Spencer Koelewyn’s bunt single drove in a run.

Nick Hoekstra went 3-for-4, including a two-run double to left field that made it 4-0.

Later, Peyton Garbers, who ended up 2-for-2, came through with an RBI double to center with two outs to put the Royals on top 5-0.

The Bandits used a two-out rally in the bottom of the second.

After Cody Niklason drew a base on balls and Akren Prodoehl singled, Jameson Meyer blasted a double to the wall in left-center field to cut the deficit to 5-2.

In the seventh, pinch-hitter Chris Lerdal reached on an error and pinch-hitter Jacob Schoon was hit by a pitch to chase Rhode. Niklason’s one-out single loaded the bases.

Prodoehl plated Lerdal with a groundout to pull Post 74 within 5-3; however, another groundout ended the rally.

Quentin Evers recorded the final three outs, giving up one hit, to notch the save.

Tyler Kreutner had the Bandits’ other hit. Meyer walked twice.

Left-hander Jacob Devine took the loss after surrendering five runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts in a complete-game performance.

Game 2

• Brookings 4, Renner 1

Meyer threw a complete game and the Bandits never trailed in the nightcap.

The right-hander gave up one run on eight hits and a walk. He struck out 10 batters.

Brookings, the visiting team on the scoreboard in Game 2, scored single runs in the first, third and fourth frames to build a 3-0 cushion.

Devine reached on an error to open the game. He moved to second on Kreutner’s sacrifice bunt and took third on a Prodoehl single.

Meyer reached on an error on a batted ball with two outs, as Devine scored to make it 1-0.

In the third, Devine walked and Kreutner was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on Prodoehl’s sacrifice bunt.

Lerdal’s sacrifice fly plated Devine to put Post 74 ahead 2-0.

Drew Cole drew a one-out base on balls in the fourth. Justin Devine followed with a walk.

Jacob Devine then drove in a run with a single to left to push the margin to 3-0.

The Royals scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth.

Logan Ymker, Nate Hartung and Joey Engeman had consecutive singles to load the bases. With two outs, Veland stepped up with an RBI hit to cut the margin to 3-1.

Jacob Devine scored for a third time in the seventh as he walked, took second on Kreutner’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a Prodoehl single to provide for the final margin.

Prodoehl finished 2-for-2 with a walk. Meyer and Brandon Nelson both singled.

Eight different Post 307 players had a hit, including a double by Trey Rogers.

Sam Breit took the loss after allowing three runs – two earned – on three hits and three walks with a strikeout in four innings of work.
