Bandits split with Royals

RENNER – The Bandits and Royals split a baseball doubleheader Monday afternoon, with the guests winning the opener 2-1 and the hosts prevailing in the nightcap by an 11-6 margin.

Brookings (10-6) plays a doubleheader at Sioux Falls West on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Game 1

 Brookings 2, Renner 1

Jackson Krogman outdueled Mason Runia on the mound to help the Bandits drop the Royals.

Krogman allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Brookings struck first as Rhett Zelinsky doubled with one away in the fourth and scored on Daniel Messerli’s single.

Renner pulled even in the bottom of the inning after Andy Moen notched a leadoff triple and scored on a one-out wild pitch.

Jamison Honkomp stroked his second double of the game to open the fourth. He quickly advanced 90 feet on Max Kjelden’s single and later scored when Cole Mahlum hit into a fielder’s choice following Krogman’s two-out walk.

Messerli finished 3-for-3.

Runia gave up two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Game 2

 Renner 11, Brookings 6

Aspen Dahl went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and scored twice to pace the Royals.

Renner put up a six-spot in the second to grab a 6-2 lead.

It was 8-4 through three and Brookings scored twice in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit in half; however, Renner answered with a trio of runs in the bottom of the frame to provide for the final margin.

Zach Ridl picked up the pitching victory, surrendering four runs – one earned – on three hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. Broc Schaefbauer worked the final three and was credited with the save after giving up two runs – none earned – on one hit and a walk with a pair of Ks.

Both teams committed four errors and scored five unearned runs.

Honkomp was 2-for-3 for the Bandits.

Joey McMacken drove in two runs and Henry Hammrich contributed one RBI.

Krogman and Zelinsky added hits.

Caden Wright took the loss after giving up six runs – five earned – on two hits and seven walks with two strikeouts in two innings. Mason Bebensee allowed five runs – one earned – on six hits and two walks with a strikeout over the next four.
