Bandits sweep Huron Post 7 in doubleheader

HURON – The Brookings Bandits improved 9-3 on the season after sweeping Huron Post 7 in a doubleheader. They did it in impressive fashion as they outscored Huron ()-() in the two games.

Game 1

 Brookings 13, Huron 0 (5 inn.)

Brookings scored in every inning, but the last one in the first game as they beat Huron via the 10-run rule in five innings.

The Bandits took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Jackson Krogman led off the inning with a walk. He then scored on a Rhett Zelinsky ground out. Huron went down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning. 

Brookings would add two more runs in the top of the second. With two outs and two runners on Henry Hammrich hit a two-run single to make it 3-0 heading into the third inning.

Cole Mahlum walked to lead off the third and was hit home on a Zelinsky triple. The bases were then loaded with nobody out and Jamison Honkomp walked and Jake Ammann hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. The Bandits added one more run before the end of the inning to make it 7-0 heading into the fourth.

The Bandits tacked on five more runs in the top of the fifth. The inning was highlighted by RBI singles from Honkomp and Krogman. Huron was unable to score in both the fourth and the fifth inning and the game ended because of the 10-run rule.

Hammrich went 1-for-2 with three RBI’s. Krogman went 1-for-3 with two RBI’s and Zelinsky went 1-for-4 with two RBI’s. Zelinsky pitched all five innings for the Bandits. He gave up one hit, struck out nine batters and walked two.

Game 2

• Brookings 11, Huron 3

It was more of the same in game two, except Huron was able to get on the scoreboard. Brookings offense remained hot though and they struck early once again putting up six runs in the first inning.

Krogman and Mahlum led off the game with back-to-back singles. Zelinsky then hit a double that sent both of them home and he later scored on a sacrifice fly. Daniel Messerli scored on a wild pitch and Krogman hit a two-run single to make it 6-0 heading into the bottom of the inning. Huron went down one-two-three in the bottom of the inning.

Zelinsky hit a home run to lead off the second inning. Honkomp then hit an RBI triple to make it 8-0 heading into the bottom of the second. Huron went down one-two-three once again in the bottom of the inning.

Mahlum walked to start the third inning and later scored on a wild pitch. Parker Rykhus hit an RBI double to make it 10-0 heading into the bottom of the third. Huron was able to get a hit in the bottom of the inning, but was unable to score once again.

Huron held Brookings scoreless in the top of the fourth and scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. Neither team scored in the fifth inning. Huron held the Bandits scoreless once again in the sixth and scored one run in the bottom of the inning.

The Bandits scored one run in the final inning and held Huron scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

Zelinsky went 4-for-5 with three RBI’s. Krogman went 3-for-5 with two RBI’s and Rykhus went 1-for-2 with two RBI’s. Ammann picked up the win for the Bandits after pitching five innings. He gave up two runs, one earned on one hit. He struck out seven batters and walked one.

 The Bandits will face Renner in a doubleheader on Thursday.
