Bandits' weekend ends early

LENNOX – The Brookings Bandits were eliminated in the Renner Tournament after playing three games. They fell to the Minnesota Blizzard in the first game then beat Lennox before falling to the Sioux Falls Bulls.

Friday

 Minnesota Blizzard 13, Brookings 1 (4 inn.)

Brookings jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but then the Blizzard scored 13 unanswered runs and the game ended in four innings.

The Bandits scored one run in the top of the first inning when Jackson Krogman scored on a Jamison Honkomp sacrifice fly. The Blizzard responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Blizzard added two more runs in the second inning to make it 8-1.

Minnesota scored two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to make it 13-1 which ended the game because of the 10-run rule. Krogman and Daniel Messerli each went 1-for-2 and Henry Hammrich went 1-for-1. Brookings only had three hits. Rhett Zelinsky picked up loss after giving up eight runs, five earned in two innings.

Saturday

 Brookings 10, Lennox 5

The Bandits bounced back with a win against Lennox in their second game of the tournament. They came back from a 3-2 deficit to get the win.

Each team scored one run in the first inning. Brookings scored when Max Kjelden was walked with the bases loaded. Lennox took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, but Brookings responded with a run of their own in the top of the third when Zelinsky scored on a Parker Rykhus sacrifice fly. Lennox regained the lead in the bottom of the third when they scored a run.

The Bandits struck back in the top of the fourth and retook the lead on a two-run home run from Hammrich. They then added one run in the top of the sixth on a Messerli sacrifice fly to make it 5-3. Leennox would tie the game 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh so the game went into extra innings.

Brookings responded with five runs in the top of the eighth. Honkomp hit a two-run single and Rykhus hit a three-run home run to make it 10-5 and that put the game out of reach.

Rykhus went 1-for-3 with four RBI’s. Hammrich went 1-for-2 with two RBI’s and Honkomp went 1-for-5 with two RBI’s. Mason Bebensee picked up the win for the Bandits after pitching the first five innings. He gave up three earned runs on four hits. He struck out four batters and walked three.

The Bandits were unable to get their offense going and they were shutout and eliminated from the tournament.

Brookings had just three hits. Zelinsky, Jake Ammann and Joey McMacken each went 1-for-2 on the day. Messerli was handed the loss after pitching the first four innings. He gave up seven runs, four earned on five hits. He struck out one batter and walked five. 

The Bandits have a doubleheader in Madison on Tuesday.
